Well I bought this on Ebay : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...N%3AIT&rd=1

It's a 2.5" screen with the same resolution as a PSone screen. Here's a pic to show the size and quality.

Now what to do with it ?????

I have several Kodak slide projectors...... Maybe in one of those ???

Any ideas you guys. smile.gif
jonjandran
Well I just stripped it and did a prelimenary test in the slide projector and everything was excellent.

Now to find a way to mount it and test it a little more. biggrin.gif
GadgetSmith
How did the slide projector work ?

A typical 35mm slide is about 1.75" diagonal, but you "might" be able to enlarge the gate to have it view a 2.5" screen, and I would guess it may work pretty well, but it will of course depend on the total size of the lenses in the light engine, and the FOV of the projection lens...

cheers,

Here's some results using a 2.5 inch screen and a slide projector. Results are good to 45 inch diagonal.

That screen has only half the resolution of the screen I'm using. smile.gif

The Intec PS2 screen and the one you're using are both 320x234 native resolution.

A pretty large step down from 1080p, oofta...yes it is...are you making it for someone else or? Another room?

Anyways, have any pics to show us smile.gif ?

That's odd , the specs I saw for the 2.5" Intec screen was 116,160 pixels resolution and the one I'm using is 224,460 pixels.

The hipgear PS2 controller 2.5 inch LCD that I had was definitely 116,160 dots resolution, not anywhere near as good as the 5 inch PSOne LCD at 320 X 240 (aka 224,460 dots).

The pixel and dot thing is pretty tricky, 320 X 240 pixels is 960 X 240 dots.
The post at ladyada.net said that the hipgear LCDs are "Display Format: 480x234 dot", not pixel.
See what I mean?

I built one of these already. You can get a pretty good, but pixely projection of 32". I used a 100w metal halide flood light. I then had to turn the brightness all the way down, because it made the whole picture white at first. I was like huh? Then I turned the brightness down, and figured out, it was the brightest it would allow. So, a 100w like I had, or a 150w metal halide normal with a soup laddle will be sufficient.
jonjandran
Well it's turning out pretty good. I've had a projection up to 100" Diagonal with good results.

Looks like I'll need another fan in the case though. And I need a 30 pin extension to put the controller out of the way.

So this project is on the back burner for a week or so. smile.gif

Too bad about the need for an extension sad.gif

The third line in this quote is amusing http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?s...st&p=134635

Well I'm not doing this to make a high quality projector. I'm doing it to see what a sub-$100 projector can do. tongue.gif

If my conversion was correct you spent 66$ on the LCD panel with shipping. Your on a very tight budget if your aiming at <100$

Well since you care so much.

Kodak slide projector---Goodwill --- $10
2.5" Lcd -- Ebay --- $66
LL Extension --- LL Store--- $17

Total ---- $93

So there .... hahaha... urmmm whatever. smile.gif
tgreenwood
Could you post some pictures of your build when you get back to it?

When I experimented with a hip gear controller LCD and a slide projector I had to get a fan blowing directly on the LCD to keep it cool enough to keep it working. I have since gotten a couple of good small hot mirrors but would add a fan as well if I went the slide projector route again.

Good luck with your budget projector. Looking forward to seeing the results.

Hi again!
What model of slide projector?
Can you put any images with the projector modifications?
What LL extension?

Thank you.

Well I've put the project on permanent hold. Why you ask ? Well let me tell you.

Now I don't usually put down LumenLabs but when something sucks it just sucks. And the extensions from LL SUCK !!! I pay over $17 for a 6" 30pin extension which is ridiculous. But then they give you a POS zif connector to connect the two ffc's. Now this is the second extension I've bought from LL and let me tell you. It's next to impossible to use the zif connector without breaking them. They are to fragile and the two ffc's just won't fit in the connector and allow it to close without breaking.

So I'm pissed and not going to continue this project until I calm down which might be never.

It will be much easier to insert to ffc’s into a zif connector if you pull out the metal pins sticking out of the back of the zif. They should pull out fairly easily.

It's not a matter of the metal pins. The 2 Ffc's fit in fine , you just can't push the plastic locking connector in also. When you try to the plastic tabs break. It's a matter of the zif connector only being thick enough for one ffc. There has to be a better solution.

Hot Glue??

It worked for me when my cheap plastic locking connectors broke.

(actually only one broke but I hot glued both to be safe-works great)

Yea I could do that, in fact I suggested it to someone last week. But that only works if the 2 ffc's are clamped tight together already. With the zif connector broke , the ffc's aren't tight together.

Paper clip or perhaps a folder clamp? They make plastic ones now.

I'd turn that 2.5" lcd into a sweet 40" RPTV.

I can make it work. But the point is that I'm pissed about it. For $17.50 I should get something that works.

True, but think of the DIY spirit, taking a pile of parts that you found in a dumpster (or on ebay)and turning it into something that just blows peoples minds.

I have found that no matter how much you spend on something, you usually have to "make it work" yourself ,and in the process you can make it better than it was before. It's the challenge that most interests me.....a great man once said,"we choose to do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard...",although his words applied to journeying to the moon, they can be applied to anything that we do with just as much truth.

DIY is not simply an idea but a frame of mind.A lifestyle,if you will, that governs everything that man does or will ever do.We must embrace this philosophy if we are to continue as a species.

I feel for you though.I've spent way more than $17.50 on stuff that didn't work(especially from ebay).Thank God that he invented the human brain that we may rise above the imperfect to contemplate the perfection that lies within each and every one of us.

I really want to see this... because I'm cheap and this looks like a nice easy way to make a cheap projector... More of a novelty then anything, but still awesome.

Check this out, I've made the cable extension by myself. It's in russian, but sometimes pix says more than words smile.gif

BTW, you can find the final results with 2.5" and slide projector there also...

Hello,
I'm new around here and just started to try to make a projector with the lilliput 2.5" screen and a kodak slide projector. I stripped the lilliput easy and it still works and then I took the bottom off of the projector...I'm now at a loss at how to mount the screen in the projector I don't suppose you have any ideas/thoughts or pictures of how you did this?
Thanks,

I did exactly this too (2.5" Lilliput into a Kodak Ektographic slide PJ). What I did was remove the whole mechanism that holds the slides, and stripped it down. Then I fastened the LCD panel in place where the slide holder would be by taping it to the structure with metal duct tape. I reassembled the body of the little monitor with the FFC sticking out of it, and fed it down through the hole on the top of the PJ where the slides would drop in from the carousel.

I'm sorry, I know that the explanation is convoluted, but I expect that if you open up your PJ and look around inside you'll get a feel for what I'm saying.

Good luck,

Good luck,

I did just that last night. I had to cut some of the wires to the slide handling mechanism. My projector has a squirrel cage blower that is connected to a motor via a rubber O-ring. I was running the projector on low and the motor got really really hot and now the thing won't turn on anymore? I think it was a motor or some kind of motor-transformer I didn't quite understand why there were so many wires coming off of it.

Now I can't get the dang thing to turn on at all. Any clue on what I did wrong?
madmadscientist
Well I guess I've joined the ranks here. I bought two slide projectors from a local salvage place. Ones a really cool looking older single slide model. The Lilliput screen popped right in and worked. It was not as ideal as I wanted as it uses only a 200 watt bulb and a 3" lens. I moved on to the Kodak projector with a 4" lens and a 300 watt bulb. The stripped screen fit into the slide holder (I had to push pretty hard) and it worked!!! I know it wasn't great but it worked!! I was monkeying with it taping some stuff down to make it more transportable and it happened.....

I tore the fricken super thin flex PCB from the controller to the screen...... There is no way to fix this is there? I just got it working long enought to impress the wife with my <$100 video projector and bam I broke it...Dang....

I also got a working Enki overhead projector for $25 bucks and a Dell 17" LCD monitor with a dead backlight for free. I stripped down the dell pretty easily but have not tried it yet on the OHP.
