I bought some of the ebay home theater screen material. I'm still an appartment dweller so I bought a smaller size....It was 21.99 for a 60X122 piece of fabric. This worked much better than projecting it to the wall. I can still see the images when my lights are on. Again the images are always beter in a dark room.

Here are a few photos of my screen

Looks like you have a nice setup. What type of PJ do you have ? Do you have speakers behind the screen? Was just wondering if the "accoustically transparent" thingy really works.

Has anyone else tried that? It's a good deal.

My projector is a Toshiba DLP. The replacement bulbs are $300.00 a pop *yuck*.

I have my front left and right surround sound speakers behind the screen...It has not made a difference in the sound. The speakers are also covered by curtains

The fabric is very transparent……I have three sheets of plywood leaning against the wall. I painted the plywood flat black…I’m in an apartment so I couldn’t mount anything directly to the wall.

If your planning to put your speakers behind the screen I would be concerned about seeing your speakers through this fabric

I was not impressed at all with this screen. To me, it made the image a little blurry. Don't know about you
but I like a crisp, sharp image and my bare wall does better. IMHP Please don't take offense.

Unless I find a commercial screen pretty cheap, I'll probably go with some Goo or MaxMudd next.

JoeS, have you used blackout cloth as well? Which do you think is better? I'm nearing the point of purchasing/building a screen and am in need of opinions on what is the best of the cheap materials...

sorry to butt in, but what type of lumen levels are you getting with your PJ ?

UPW-flat is still the cheapest if you have a wall to paint. BO cloth does give better black levels, but whites do suffer a bit with low lumen levels. JMHO.

I too will be trying the black flame/mmaxxx mudd paint soon...

Wait, are you asking what kind of lumin's I'm getting GadgetSmith? If you are, I'm sad to report that I do not have a projector built yet, but I hope when I do the lumen levels are high...

Hirudin,
I have never tried blackout cloth. After experimenting with many store bought materials as well as this moviescreen, I found that the images were never as sharp on fabric as they were on my wall, the paint mix was just the next step. Not everyone can paint their wall, since this guy lives in an apartment.
What's your budget?
If you're going the most cost effective route, take GadgetSmith's advice and go with the UPW!

I um... haven't worked out a budget yet. I guess I'm going for "the most bang for my buck" route. I guess $150 would be my max as there seems to be tons of screens on eBay for ~$150. I'm watching your Slog now and am (now) heavily leaning toward a painted screen (I'll have to paint onto some MDF or something). Maybe some canvas like you mentioned in the screen log...

I guess I'd better do a lot more reading! The questions I feel like asking are probably very basic (for instance, I have no idea what UPW is...). I wish there was a "best" option (with a reasonable price) but like every other part of this project that is not the case. sad.gif

laugh.gif yea I was... sorry didn't realize you weren't up and running yet (it's hard for me to keep up with all the PLOG's !!)

I ask because I will be trying the same mix as joes and comparing it to UPW-flat (Ultra Pure White - flat finish wink.gif), BO cloth and Behr Silverscreen... what i'm especially interested in is the results I get from the existing screen samples now that i've increased my PJ from 54 lumens to 179 lumens (yea... almost 3.5x the brightness!)...

Hi,

I got some canvas material from this place.

http://www.allenscanvas.com/Primed%20Canvas%20Products.htm

It's already primed, and work pretty good as a diy screen. Get the tightest nit stuff for the best results.

Also here is a link with a picture of my portable diy screen.

Cotton duck artist canvas?

Well if you could stop it from getting a lot of wrinkles and keep water away you could paint it for some nice high gain. I need plastic so I can clean it. I found some of it today at Kinko’s they call it banner stock and it is exactly like the material my blind/screen is made of now but the jerk off manager said $5 a square foot! So my 9’ x 14' was over $500. I need to start looking at the blind makers.

Found another type of material on Ebay http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZb-aQQhtZ-1

Anyone try it? Rubberized material with a gain of 1.3 according to the listings

I got my sample from B-A from ebay and it is just BO cloth so it is the same stuf as LL sells just more money.

Ordered b-a's 76" x 111" Rubberized Matte White Canvas Projection Screen Material from eBay for ~$30 + $10 S.H. before I realized I could find similar for less, was easy to stretch onto a 16:9 123" frame made from 1x2's ~$35 and performs well, will be spray gunning goo systems grey on it later but works very well for now.
