Hi guys, well after discovering the site about a month or so ago; i have now actually made a start on my very own projector. smile.gif

I have been organising and ordering all my major components and they are now starting to trickle in. I recieved my monitor (740N) this afternoon, and have stripped it (without any major dramas) it is ready and waiting for AG removal. There is a issue with the supplier of eballasts (as some others have found) so i am sitting here; down under awaiting mid next week when i should recieve my package from LL (hopefully), which will contain:

Pro Triplet
Pro Frensals
Pro Reflector
Eballast
T15 Globe
12cm 12v fans + guards

First and fore most, i must thank sales for there quick replys and understanding. Then the forum members which have contributed to a absolutley fantastic site full of info, tips and helpful helpers tongue.gif

Anyway, i have a few original ideas to try for my box design and component layout (which i'll post about more later) i am hoping to contribute as much as i can to the community and will be updating my thread with all the tips and troubles i come across along the way. smile.gif

Mods could you please move this in to the PLOGS section i want to add to the forum, though i don't have enough experience to make 50 posts.

Done, welcome and good luck!
Durachko
Yay!!!! Another builder. Can't get enough of 'em. Best of luck for a super build and welcome! smile.gif cool.gif post-418-1138467278.gif

Ok time for my first 'proper' post, yesterday i recieved my monitor (740N)( AU$240 ebay special tongue.gif ) That afternoon i completed the strip, which i was extremley worried about. I definately understand how people can kill their panel's; even with the smallest of slip ups.

Anyway after a few close shaves and fiddling around with the clip i had the job done within a hour or so.

Here's some pics:

Heres a shot of the 740n monitor sitting beside my 32" samsung lcd.

Now a shot of the panel with the cover off and exposing the back-light layers.

A shot of the still intact FCC's hurrah biggrin.gif

Finally the panel free of all the oppression surrounding it dry.gif

Paying AU$240 for a monitor which you use 10% of the mass is just a little crazy....a very little tongue.gif

Ok well that's phase one out of the way, today i made some really good progress i bought some more mdf and have 3 sides of a box constructed.

As of about 1 hours ago my panel is drenched in water soaked paper towel and is having a Xfoliating session; this should get her a prettier face. laugh.gif

I'll slot in a couple more posts in tonight with my box and AG removal.

~Peace Out~
elken2004
Heheheheh welcome to the brethren...
hendo*AU*
Alright; is this what a AG removal suppose to look like blink.gif ?????

laugh.gif Hehehe... Just joking i'll post the 'proper' shots in ten ! laugh.gif
elken2004
ok dats novel,,,, hmmmmm effective
hendo*AU*
OK it has been 2 hours since the panel first wet it widdle fingies tongue.gif and i have just seperated one layer; not sure if its the poleriser or not so im going to wait 30min before having another go.

Here the real set-up laugh.gif :

theres around 4-5 leyers of paper towel; poly-unsaturated biggrin.gif

And now for my solid as a rock 3 sided box (well as solid as i could get with three sides blink.gif )

Next up, the lcd frame and a part of the back light assembly representing an 'around-about' layout.

Well thats about my progess report for the last two days, not much more i can / want to really do while, im waiting on my package from LL. I keep you guys updated with the AG removal through the night (shouldn't be too long now)

~ Banchong; over and out ! ~
elken2004
well ??? did ya get a corner tocome up clear yet???????
hendo*AU*
No, not as yet i've had a little go at each corner now, the first corner i've lifted around 3-5mm up of the 'pixel' area (poleriser most likely)

Im going to give it another 30mins from now which will be 4 hours.
elken2004
you can tell if you have the whole lot,,, near the edge is glass,,, pick till you have something still there,,,, pick the very edge,,,,, you have not yet found it,,, even non wetted it will part..
DAZZZLA
What’s the number on the back light casing? And does the LCD appear to have A/G on both sides, ie both side have a matt appearance?

DJ
DAZZZLA
HT170EX1-100 is the number I’m referring to. Here's mine for reference
hendo*AU*
Sorry i was trying to find some viable batteries....

Ok it was the back light, here is a photo of a similar sticker to yours.......hmmmmm so i dont know??? blink.gif

sry about the size, my PC is playing up....
DAZZZLA
I was referring to the stamped code. Look at the second and third pic from the link I gave to my plog. If it’s the same panel it should have a matt finish (A/G) to both sides of the LCD as opposed to one side matt (A/G) and one side gloss like shiny glass (no A/G.

You say that you managed to get 5mm of a corner up. Can you get a knife blade under it and does it appear to be tinted. If it’s clear you probably have the A/G only.

Going by the place of manufacture, Taiwan, I’d say we have different panels, Hmmm, I think you are in un-chartered territory. Just remember not to force it. If it is going to come off with water then it should peel up with little force, like pulling stiff gladwrap off the roll.

DJ
hendo*AU*
hmmmmmmm....... they are definately different panels; i dont even have any stamping at all on the bare metal......

OK im going to stick it out keep letting it soak it's little tootsies until she's ready to get the Hell OFF MY PANEL! laugh.gif

The piece i managed to peel up isn't the AG hmmmmm !!! why did i get this akward bloody thing wink.gif

Anyway ill keep you updated as i go on through the night agghghhghghg!!!! up and atom!!!!

~Milo Kerrigan, over and out~
elken2004
did I miss the fun ??
elken2004
oops,,, twas not browsing twas stasis,,, CSI'ing smile.gif
hendo*AU*
Hehe i was also CSIycling i can't believe he was her dad oh my golly gosh ...... laugh.gif

You havn't missed anything... i have managed to make no benifitial progress, i just keep going around ruining my corners even more...... Why oh why couldn't i have not just recieved one of the easy panels hmmm. tongue.gif

It has been 5.5 hours and all i keep pulling up is the satanastic pooleriser, i had a quick double check at the otherside of the panel and there is no AG there.

Maybe if i photocopy that side and stick it over my bung side i'll be all good, what do you think ???? laugh.gif
hendo*AU*
Good morning guys it's 9:30am here and i've been soaking my panel for 14 hours now, stilll no luck. sad.gif

I have 3 corners up which are all the same layer, after having a closer look the actual sheet IS clear though there is a a tinted darker 'GLUE' type substance which breaks down and becomes a glob, when scraped lighty. huh.gif

Now my question; is the poleriser tint within the arcrilic sheet? and would the polersier break down within 2 hours of soaking because that is how it was last night???? blink.gif

Hmmmm.......... . . .

~ Rick James, over and out ~
elken2004
with the lifted part,,, can you see another thin sheet still on the glass subsrtate at all,,, it sounds astho you have the a/g sheet,,, hard to tell without pics posted,,

look if you do pull whole lot up, you can seperate them off panel so long as you dont kink the sheets, in process of lifting and reuse the polariser

the sheets dont goto to very edge of glass so you should be able to see,,
hendo*AU*
Yes there is definately another sheet apon the glass, i'll try (betteries) to get some photo's of where im currently at......
elken2004
ok then it sounds like the A/G only,,, you need to try and get it off,,, the longer the soak,, the more the polariser is likely to suffer..

the a/g should come off like a piece of glad wrap
hendo*AU*
Hmmmm it appears that i have successfully SCREWED this up, i cant get a photo (batteries) though im around 95.63% sure i've grabbed the pooleriser. It's taking alot of pressure to budge it and i've only got around 3 inches up.

The thing is the AG (i think) is pretty thick and it seems that the water has had little or no effect on the sheet. There is a darker layer stuck onto that but i cant even get that off the ag because it's that thin and brittle..... (much thinner than glad wrap) if i manage to get a that layer up; when folded over what should i be looking for ????

Grrrrr...... seems like i'll now be shopping for a new pooleriser
elken2004
if you have commited to lifting, lift it all with (( heheh edit: without damage ))damage if you can,, then drop whole sheet into a sink of warm water and then peel a/g off,,,, at worst, that works too
hendo*AU*
AGHGHGHGHGHG!!!!! i managed to get a piece up and when folded over it turns black GRRRRRRRR........ i was going so well........

alright im going to need some links to pooleriser dealers (AU based if any)

I really dont think i could have done much more soaking wise, the AG is thick and the PO was so thin it would be extemely tough to seperate the two, without ripping up both at the same time. I don't see how the AG would even be permable no matter how much time i gave it.

/ aghghghghgh!!!! runs down street arms flayling and jumps off near by cliff into ocean
hendo*AU*
Evening all, i've spent most of the afternoon at Uni, the rest of this evening i spent reading though through parts of the MASSIVE blink.gif anti glare thread.

There is some really good stuff in there and it almost makes me happy that i've managed to pull the whole show off my panel tongue.gif

I just finsihed doing a quick check on my lcd by powering it up (with signal), shinning a torch through the back and applying (pieces dry.gif ) of my poolariser to the panel just to check that all pixel are firing. All is good; im a bit suprised really as i put a huge amount of pressure on the panel trying to rip the layer from their supurb welding.

I'm impressed with the amount of variance in colour; you get from turning the poolariser around

Elken and others in the know... im going to need your guidence through my steps to follow

ie. do you suggest using the original PVA? (in such such layouts as aft triplet???) or purchase a brand new sheet and try different arrangements???

Im willing to part with the money to buy the new sheet as i want to get the best quallty i can get out of my pj, and i really want to join your LL possie laugh.gif

Anyways i dont have any photos of the layers or test, i will get some more batteries in the morning a upload a merriad of photos of what im left with and any ideas that spring up between now and then.

Anyone who wants input on my thread go for it, i want to learn as much as i can as i'm really enjoying this hobby while the weather+water is still cold, if you have a question ill try to help where i can..... huh.gif

Hi lads, not a very productive last 24hours, really haven't done one thing with my projector today......

Though i have had a couple of ideas pop in to my head..... rolleyes.gif First and foremost while at some shops this arvo; i passed by some velcro and thought to my self how could that be used in my pj..... FRESNELS is what. smile.gif

I want to keep my projector as small as possible (square ways) so im thinking i could make some tinsy winsy fresnel frames; have wide strips of velcro on the box side and just enough to cover the edge of the actual frame. Slide the fresnels into place (with a piece of plastic in between the two velcros) position them however i want, then pull out the thin piece of plastic wiggle slightly and the frames will be stuck in place. huh.gif

I think / know they will hold well enough and i think that they will not melt under 100"C, i doubt there will be a safe operating temp marked on the packet though i can just stick a couple in the oven and see what the hairy little basstard's can withstand.... laugh.gif

OK guys i want you to past judgment on this idea (and don't suger coat it elken (im diabetic laugh.gif ) !!!!!

Thats about it for today, i'll be up a for a while going though the site and i have the whole day tomorrow to mess around with my box and take a few tommyoto's (photos) of the panel etc.... smile.gif

Hi all, well im back after almost three weeks...... but i bring with me a completed PRO LL pj.

Sry to all that were following my plog; though facing the challenge of waiting two weeks for my package to get here, i think it was a good choice to put my plog on hold until my equipment arrived, before working much more on my box, lcd, component layout. (incase of breakages, and stupid decisions)
As well have been without a camera, up until yesterday afternoon (as it was borrowed, much longer than expected)

Anyway i fired my projector up for the first time; late sunday evening (2:00am monday really laugh.gif )
For some reason the circuit i had done didn't get power to anything (figure it out at a later date) so i did a quick mock up, job just using spare leads straight to the wall socket (1-Ballast+1-Lcd+1-Fan=3-sockets cool.gif ) and walla we have light stunning, stunning 140" light. I was blown away with my ential results, though as you will see later i have a hell of a lot to look forward to ph34r.gif smile.gif

Tonight i worked on my lcd frame and fresnel layout, and am really happy with the layout and results!!!! wub.gif

Alright i'm back and here to stay, i will be posting pics and info for the next few of hours, so stayed tuned. Any questions / comments go right ahead smile.gif

One word of advice to people thinking about doing one of these projectors, Go and do it photo's do not do these things justice; It's a great hobby and has unbelievable rewards. The main reason i chose to work on a LL pj was to not ever have to worry about "when is my lamp going blow" and i can now say it was a fantastic choice and i advise anyone looking into get started ASAP.

~LumyLub Pagecta's FTW~
hendo*AU*
Allright this is what my box looks like at this point in time, overall im pretty happy. Everything is square, it's not that massive and im exicited about implementing a few original (kinda) designs i've come up with and in the process of..... tongue.gif

This is a profile view of the box, the dimensions are;
L = 1050mm
H = 325mm
W= 390mm

Lid off, its built with 6mmm MDF for sides and top and 12mm for base, triplet holder and back/brace.

This is very much a mock setup, it will be mounted directly to the left wall, painted, aswell as having a few ideas up my sleeve; to do with design but we will get to that later... ph34r.gif I will have another go at my wiring so no (wires at all) visible < this was very temp; 5 min job.

more to come.... tongue.gif
hendo*AU*
It's now time for the guts..... mmmmm guts..... yum rolleyes.gif

Top down yo... the first glace within.... as stated earlier in my PLOG, the equipment is as follows;

1 x Vue ballast
1 x Pro reflector
1 x T15 6500K LL Lamp
1 x 220 fl condenser lens
1 x 650fl feild lens
1 x 740N samsung lcd 17" (more info in later posts)
1 x 120mm 12v fan
1 x Pro Triplet
Many x Blood, sweat, tears (not really laugh.gif )

pretty simple really.....

You can kind of see how i've went about my frames etc in this photo (will get into more detail later), they are alloy U 'frames' with velcro (soft) within and vecro holding them (firmly) to the sides. smile.gif This went a lot better than expected, they hold great and make for unlimited adjustabilty. Both the lcd and lexan frames are without velcro and are just screwed in.

Now for the all important measurements...... not final only adjusted once so far....

1-2mm from light to reflector
175mm from light (center) to lexan
205mm from light (center) 220fl lens
15mm gap between condenser and field
15-17mm gap between field fresnel + lcd
550mm from back of lcd to back of triplet

yet more to come!

~this is like a trojan horse......carrying posts.....~ laugh.gif
hendo*AU*
And the final photo (build wise only still screenies to come).....

Heres the back side of the lcd, in it wee wittle U fram sitting upon a it's riser pad.

You will notice the wooden trim running along the bottom of the box, it was a late decision (after recieving equipment); this is actually to widen the box as i wanted a little bit more fresnel overlap (wider then lcd) than at first. It's workerd out pretty well, as it provedes an escape route for the leads, area for air flow if needed (temp seems to allright at the moment (with one fan) and a good platform for the lcd and fresnels.

** Allright i will explain my next post now, so not to give anyone a heart attack... If you have read my plog from the start, you'd have remembered me having a spot of trouble with my AG removal. Well in the end i was left with 4-5 reasonable pieces of polar bear and the AG still stuck with it. I have tryed soaking them in Fuzzy warmish water as elken suggested, though i was still unable to seperate the layers, i left a couple of small pieces in there for and extra <hour and then the freakin polariser starts disloving itself. We came to the conclusion that i was in unchartered waters as my 740N had been manufactured in march 2006 and had there-fore been equiped with a different panel with different coatings.** sad.gif

Anyway long story, medium laugh.gif as it stands the pieces of polariser are placed in between the lcd and field lens, adjusted and left just hanging around. As i was left with so little i only have enough to cover around 3/5th's of the screen. I am still extremly stoked with the results i know i have a lot to look forward too.

I'm currently in talks with another aussie LL member; about buying some left over 3dlens.com polariser which is great news for me but i think im under a NDA so i better not say any more for the time being. ph34r.gif laugh.gif

/goes to try and make polariser with glad rap and black paint...... laugh.gif
hendo*AU*
**READ ABOVE POST FIRST **

(Camera was set to auto)

Right this a piece of crap photo and im ashamed to put it up for the world to see but what the hay.....
It's a screenie of the 720p Cars trailer and really doesn't do it justice; i own a 32" HD samsung lcd and this thing comparitably isn't that far behind at all.

I have huge light leaks from the fan and rear of the box, which would be be putting out at least a 60w globe (6500K) . You would be able to read a newpaper with ease in any part of the room, though because the projection is actually that good i haven't bothered with addressing the issue as yet. The walls surrounding the projection are really lit up and this photo does not show the in the slightest or the how great the colours are, the contrast is not that good as there is to much abmbient light at the moment though it is still great. smile.gif

I may try a polarisered triplet tomorrow, tested ealier to see if i could turn the lcd around and everthing was great; leads just slides under the riser pad. I'm not expecting very good results, as i put a piece of polar in front of the triplet and it made everthing blurry as hell (may be due to AG or im thinking now, that i'd have to adjust the focus with it infront of the triplet.... tomorrows another day... rolleyes.gif

That's about it for tonight i'd like to here what you guys think so far and any questions you might have; just fire away. smile.gif

~Luey La Phozchnecter FTW~
arizonavideo
Just for testing you can use a small piece of polariserer mounted on a peice of glass near the lamp too it will still work it just needs to be kept cool.
hendo*AU*
Thanks for the idea AV, i've tryed just holdng a piece infont of the lamp (not a good idea; UV wise) so i didn't leave it there for long, thinking there's no way to keep it secure + save it from melting. I might try a 'proper' setup tonight and see how she goes.

For today, i think it's time to address my light leakages and 'sun' proof my room cool.gif

~ fact; polar bears bite~
ChristmasGT
Hey there hendo! I have a sammy 730B not unlike your 740, I am strongly going to reccomend that if you decide to get another LCD use mothers polish it works out VERY VERY Well and is alot safer.

I think our Samsungs have great Translusancy (sp?) and the mothers polish worked out so so well and was much safer.

GOOD LUCK I"LL BE WATCHING YOU!~
hendo*AU*
Thanks for the tip Chistmas, im going to see how the polariser replacement goes first, i actually just stuck a couple of pieces of 'celo' tape onto a section of polar and am really.... really happy with the results. I cant wait to have the full screen up and running. (im typing this on the half screen which is visible laugh.gif )

Your results were the first i saw on the site, and the 360 screens were what really got me into to starting this project.... thanks

Oh and by the way Elken check your freakin PM's; i joke, i joke laugh.gif

~what the duice!?~
hendo*AU*
This arvo i went to 'clark rubber' to see what they had in the way of filter foam for my light leakage issues; i found some really nice stuff...... here it is;

Good stuff but AU$12 450mmX100mm it a bit steep.... Most foams are made from an element of crude oil which explains the price rise;... or so i was told by the sales dude ohmy.gif

When i got it home i decided to dip it through a quick bath of diluted black paint ( to help more with leakage and prevent a blue tinge from being emitted) I dont think it hurt and may have even aided it a little rolleyes.gif

Here's the lamp a few seconds after arcing, you can see where the light escapes at the left of the 'globe' (cold air intake smile.gif )

This show the light leakage at the top of the box, its a 80mmX390mm space behind the lamp, where the wiring and ballast are situated. ( the wiring is not final quick job (no circuit)

I like this space because;

A) it gives you room for the ballast and wiring + keeps it away from the lamp (ballast is cool to touch)
cool.gif You can have the box flush up against a wall and still have air flow coming from the back.
C) I haven't seen it done before, probably has though laugh.gif

The pic is self is pretty true to the amount of light that come from the top, though the fan leakage is under-estimated and several times worse, i will be addressing this later..... i have another kind of cool idea.

And finally this is with the foam installed.... it does are really good job and was well worth it. The pic is pretty true and the leakage at the far side and above the ballast; will be non-existant when final mounting is complete.

So guys what do you think??? unsure.gif

Hey guys, been doing a few tests whilst playing with my pj over the last few nights

First up i followed AV's advise and had a go at putting a piece of polariser in front of the lamp (by hand again unsure.gif ) with poor results; minimal (wrong) colours and extremly blurred. This may / (is) because of the method of placement. Im not sure even if equiped properly it would be adquate, as i've been unable to find anyone else's results or discussion about the process.

After that i let the pj cool down for a while, then swapped around the lcd so that the side without the polariser was facing the triplet. The results again were poor when trying to polarise; either from the front or aft of the projection lens.

I'm under the impression that both of these tests may be getting serverly alted by still having the AG layer present. The layer is; thick, 'hard' and 'pitted' which all combines to blur a hell of a lot of light. Case in point when i applyed the celo tape, it was like night and day; the amount of clarity i would obtain through the layers.......unable to seperate the freakin things im left here 'waiting' on a replacement polariser rolleyes.gif

Elken if you read this could you please contact me (PM me) on the proposal talked about earlier, as im waiting to here from you before i decide to order from 3dlens.com tongue.gif

thanks mate.

I'll be back...... dry.gif no, no i back i back !

Allright dudes chaps hombreas.... the last couple of weeks have been busy at uni, so i was i little over typing. Anyway i have made a fair amount of progress in the past week.

* Elken's temporary replacement polariser arrived (cheers mate)

+ Elken; it cleaned up pretty well but i'm still extremely intersted in the 3dlens.com piece you have.... sry i've given up with PM's as you seem to be looking through ceramic glasses at the moment... where everything is made of pottery and terracota soldiers are your friends laugh.gif tongue.gif (and thats cool biggrin.gif )

* Mounted the projector.... not how i had first thought, though i think it has turned out really well biggrin.gif There will be photos to follow later tonight.

*Ordered an electric 'pull' down screen 150" $195 shipped ( cheapest price i had seen one go for in a few weeks of watching tongue.gif )

My Screen should arrive this weekend

* Relocated the power leads and vga cable into the wall (invisible mwa ha ha ph34r.gif )

That will do for now, though i will be doing many more updates through the evening...... stay tuned

~screen goes up; screen goes down like a polaroid picture, lucy lue!?!?~ meh
