yeah i really wanted a pun15er type layout to begin with becuse im in total awe of his work but now im getting parts and im going with a totaly different layout now...

verticle setup

mounted inside of an antique radio case

those are the basic elements so far.

parts list....

things i have:

(ebay) antique radio enclosure pre gutted so i didnt wreck it someone else did.

(surplus shed) 4 different types of precondensor lense that i hope to incorperate...

(lumenlabs) 220 rear and 650 front frensel lens and electrical wiring kit as well

as pro reflector and fs mirror... damn frensels on back order ( im in wholsale and know what thats like)

(ebay) the ultra cool and extremely large 22" american optics or something or other triplet lens!

things i have yet to get:

( home depot, lowes, menards) wood!

( home depot, lowes, menards) nails and various other niknacs!

(unsure) 17" lcd must have dvi and analog inputs leaning tward the samsung 731b.

( unsure) 150w ceramic bulb! yes elken and his like have infected me and im happy to be brought along for the run! i have a fellow looking into getting me a bulb and ballast setup for me as i type this up and hope to get an answer from him in the next couple weeks.

more to come! biggrin.gif
brainlock
i was going to do an upside down vertical as well. then i moved to a horizontal.

i'll try to find the posts on this, as it will give you a better explanation... but
the arc in the bulb rises with heat. so the internals of the lightbulb
(filament, mineral salt deposits, etc) will be in the way of your light path.

i think it's bad enough to the point where it is unuseable in this orientation.
i searched forever and only found one plog, and he abandoned it halfway through
once he found this out.

sure is a nice plan though...
brainlock
i guess it was elken that did the original test...
here's an updated thread i found with elken, GS, Cold Steel talking about it.

good luck!
diresaint
HERE is the lens im trien to get.
diresaint
i'll check it out right now maybe ill have to rethink the design then.

thanks!

Looks really cool, but I think there are a couple of things you're not taking into consideration.

The most important being you're going to have to angle the projector to get the image where you want it on the wall.

If I'm reading your diagram correctly, the center point of your projected image will be about 15" from the ceiling (or whatever the distance from the ceiling to the middle of your lens is). This will result in a good portion of our image being on the ceiling.

Still, I like the idea of doing a stylish box for a ceiling mount and think it's a going to be a great looking project!

I've worked through some of this in my plog - http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10072
diresaint
im planning to use washers or something where it mounts to the celing in order to get the image lower on the wall also the total height will be about 26" tall or 650mm. im hoping that will put the lens in a good enough posistion keep the ideas coming though anything that hepls will be appreciated btw im in no hurry if it takes 1 year im game for it!
diresaint

i cant wait to win this bid... its up to a wopping $1.04

blink.gif

i dont even care if it works for this pj im just wondering if ill win it at that price lmao.
arctan
I would be very cautious when the seller states: "ABSOLUTELY NO PAYPAL!"

revised side veiw

revised front...

got the idea from your suggetions and alot of surfing LL. blink.gif
TESCORP
interesting design, have you considered how far down it will hang? headroom?
diresaint
"the total height will be about 26" tall or 650mm", and with some angling and some keystoning im sure it'll do fine... i hope!
any suggestions?

I think you're asking for trouble with two mirrors. even accomplished builders here have ditched folded designs due to problems with mirrors. twice the mirrors, twice the probability of a headache smile.gif I'd go with the original design.
x1nick
Nice idea, but getting hot air to go down will be alot harder than getting it to rise, cant remember who had a major problem with this.
diresaint
ok so ive been looking ( more) around at some of the expermental plogs and posts and ive decided to go with the 150 - 200w ceramic bulb idea...

my experimental rig...

any ideas? rolleyes.gif

Not to mention the more the mirrors the more the lumen loss.

You know, I still can't believe I got mine to work with two mirrors, even
though it was my first. smile.gif But Boomer's right... lumen loss.

ok things that wont change in my setup...

17" lcd = as yet undetermined brand but i want digital and analog conectivity

verticle with a single fold befor the final lens (ala pun15her build)

the ability to change anything at any time i.e. distances from lenses, lcd, light source... bagh blagh.

150w ceramic lamp ( this could change befor i get the light source depending on a lot of factors ( i will buy the lamp last.)

my tenative outer box will be a vintage 1934 sparton radio shell (ebay please dont bid against me) pre-gutted so i dont have to feel bad about gutting it myself.

i will build a full box inside of this for a lot of reasons the main one is for portability.

anything im missing?

please feel free to comment it is an open forum after all!

I think the single mirror vertical ceiling mount can work.

Try taking Pun's P-Cubed design and fliping it... (not the best link, search the PLOG to see exactly what he's doing - if you havn't already)

Since the bulb is at an angle, the filaments probably won't sink directly into the light's path...

Just a thought.

thanks im reading it now had i known he was doing another id have read it sooner!

* 8.5 inches
* EFL
* f/3.9
* Catalogue Number 671-60

This lens was tested with a Kodak Ektagraphic Projector and the image was quite clear. The length enables you to place the projector farther from the screen and behind the audience (great for a large room). The lens surface is not scratched or chipped. There is some wear on the lens casing; it was purchased at a state surplus auction along with many other lenses (see other auctions), and the lens casing is marked with name of university.

Hi, I have a very similar Kodak lense that I got with a slide projector and I was wondering what the Focal Length of it was. On the front of the casing it says "KODAK PROJECTION ZOOM EKTANAR LENS (L) 4 TO 6 INCHES f:3.5"

The reason I ask is because on the Focal Calculator it ask for focal lenght in mm

Thanks in advance

It is a zoom lens with variable focal length of 4 inches (101.6mm) to 6 inches (152.4mm).

It was designed for a slide projector and will only be able to project an area of your LCD that is the size of a slide (2 inch by 2 inch max, I believe). Sorry.

Actually, I'm pretty sure you won't have any issues using this lens (though with such a sort focal length your PJ will need to be fairly close to the screen).

You will need to use a field fresnel that has a similarly short focal length (~5") in order to avoid FOV issues - that is, to ensure you capture all of the light that passes through the LCD. But the lens shouldn't have any trouble focusing on the entire surface area of the LCD and projecting it.

ok now im in troyble... i need frensel lens!i need them to be big enough for a 17" screen. any ideas? i think the ones on 3d lens are too small am i wronge?

please!
brainlock
i purchased my 17"s from diyprojectorcompany, but 3dlens has them too...
somebody said they have fresnels bigger than the 395mm that i got and that they
were optically better as well...

diyprojectorcompany sold their inventory and joined lumenlab.
so go to 3dlens and look for some fresnels that are 395mm or bigger
smile.gif
diresaint
looking but i cant find them 395 or over both ways i find 400 x 320 or something.
brainlock
http://www.3dlens.com/largefresnellens.htm

at the bottom are 2 395mm at 220 and 330 focal lengths.

if you don't want/need those focal lengths then you need to
figure out how big you need the fresnels to be and see if the
320mm will be long enough for the short side of your LCD.

I ended up cutting my fresnels down to 15" (381mm) and 12.5" (317mm)
for my 5:4 17" LCD...
diresaint
just a short update waiting on things to arrive and still waiting to find a source for larger frensels.

Hey diresaint, I live in GR, too.

This is my first post. I have been ravenously devouring sweet, juicy information from this forum for the last several days, and I am totally sold on the idea of building a projector of my own.

The best part for us Michiganders is, when it's too cold to go outside, we can sit inside and watch movies, warmed by our toasty 350-degree PJs! drink.gif

Good luck with your project! post-418-1138467278.gif
