I'm not too fond of the reviews I found on newegg and epinions,
but it's certainly tempting.

Link on Newegg

Specs on epinions

Apparently the LCD tends to die early, but the only real complaint
seems to be viewing angle otherwise, and that's not something
we're really worried about, is it? For a budget system, 480 would
be a pretty good start. I just have no idea how it would work out,
since on newegg it says "detachable screen"... it looks like on one
of the other sites that the input is on the DVD portion.

But for $90, it could be worth a try... ?

Even the link here says 720x480i NTSC resolution... with detachable
screen, so I'm going to assume the rca jacks on the side of the
monitor are input jacks for the video and audio, since it has it's
own speakers.

Just realized as well that the problems that they were having
might be due to the fact that it's used in the car (ie. bouncing,
overheating, etc.) and in our situation might be better off.

Yes, I had one of those Audiovox LCD monitors, but it was an add-on monitor that I got on EBay for 30 dollars. There are a few listed now.
The model number is VBPEX56, and it works with that video in a bag system. It has a 5.6 inch diagonal LCD.
It has RCA inputs (The one that looks like an Svideo input isn't, it is used to hook it up to the player and provides power and audio/video) and an AC adaptor.

Easy to strip, but needs an ffc extension.

The color and contrast seemed fine to me, but I don't think that the resolution is as high as it says. Probably something like 320 X 240.

It was a good buy at 30 dollars.

I'm not sure about that, only because my current LCD is 960x234,
and I have trouble reading text, and in one of the screenshots a
seller had up, I could actually read the text on the TV broadcast
they had going through it. I think I may try contacting Audiovox
just to find out.

- edit -

But you know what? I'd rather just get something I know is going
to work. Any idea if there are any LCD monitors < 11" wide that
take a 1280 x 1024 resolution?

By that do you mean one that can receive and downconvert a 1280x1024 signal, or one that can display 1280x1024 natively?

When you say your lcd is 960x234, that is counting the horizontal R, G & B pixels separately, which is just marketing gimmick by manufacturers. The real native resolution is 320x 234.

Funny you should mention that... we just had that discussion over here.

You know... don't mind me. I wasn't keeping track of the topics like I
should have been. sad.gif

There should be an emoticon for feeling sheepish. smile.gif

But to answer your other question: 1280x1024 natively is what would
be really nice. But probably way too expensive for me.

Hehe. I'm not sure you can find a <11" with native 1280x1024 res, not even in smaller laptops, but I shall dig deeper... for ZIM!!!

I'm starting to think you're right. What really kills me is looking at the
commercial projectors the other day for the church (yes, I get asked
everything...) and seeing them get 800x600 off a .5" polysilicon LCD.

Geesh.

.5" polysilicon eh? Wow. And we have to be stuck with the 17" behemoths. I wonder if anyone knows of a source for commercial projector LCD screens?

Other than ripping them out of commercial projectors? tongue.gif

Yeah... just looked up the Viewsonic PJ400, and it says:

Panel - 0.55" Poly-Si TFT with micro-lens
Aspect Ratio - 4:3 (native), 16:9
Native Resolution - 800x600
Contrast Ratio - 300:1

Makes me ill just thinking about what I could make... you know?

Found this link on Wiki: Polysilicon
and then it has a link to this: LCoS

Quote:

Sony has made it to market [2] (December 2005) with the Sony-VPL-VW100 or Ruby projector, using SXRD, 3 LCoS chips each with a native resolution of 1080p (1920 X 1080), with a stated contrast ratio of 15,000 using a dynamic lens. Before this LCoS has been used in standard sets 50" and above (November 2005).

Check out the link I found to the Sony VPL-VW100... $30,000!

Sorry... wasn't reading real well, just one cushion needed. It's a $10k
projector... not 30. smile.gif
