I'm going to be building the frame and applying the 1/4" birch ply tomorrow.

My question is: is there a consensus on screen paint at all?

What I want is the type of paint or mixture of paint that will give LL the greatest visibility during the day. I'm very close to being able to watch the projector during the day as is on my B.O. screen, and want to take it to the next level with this one.

Thanks

Opinions are wide and varied...check out some of the recipes by mississippi.

for daylight viewing, you might be a candidate for trying pyrometman's mix. it's more of a black screen solution, for better daytime / higher ambient light conditions. he was selling samples of his mix in the trading post area for a while... don't know if anyone every tried it... just kind of died out.

cheers,
gs

actually, black flame has not died out... it's going quite strong.
neither mm, myself, or pyro have discussed much about it on this forum but i'm hoping that may soon change. hopefully, soon, there will be some pre-made black flame mixes available for some and manual pull downs black flame screens for others.

however, without a doubt... i would be going with the rs-maxxmudd ll as opposed to BOC... as we have clearly shown on other forums it's advantages over BOC especially when ambient light is present.

i've update my post here with the latest rs-maxxmudd and LL versions...

Thanks guys,

That's what I thought, but I just wanted make sure.

Frame's built. Wood is primed and I'm painting upw on it, now. I've got the mud mix and I'll apply it either later tonight or tomorrow morning.
rpearsey
Ok, it's up.

The good - I like the big 4:3 screen. Borders are nice. They obsorb light, well etc. MMud is the real deal if applied properly, which brings me to the bad -

The bad - I didn't apply it so well. hot spotting. too much texture in the paint. And, I can see the seam where I joined the two boards. The latter is an annoyance but is not a huge problem as it's right on the line for 16x9 full screen viewing and I don't like to crane my neck up. But, still, thought I'd gotten rid of it.

Any thoughts on how to correct this? Does LL blackcloth come large enough for this kind of screen. THought I might strech the cloth over the screen and paint it with an air gun.
pb_maxxx
i'm going to make a July 18th update to both mixes and back off 2oz of polycrylic to help eleviate some the reported hotspotting.

secondly, all of the flattening agents reside in the bottom of the can, so if it's not stirred before using it... the mix will much glossier than it should be.

it appears that with a gloss white basecoat... due to the transparency of the mix... the gloss from the basecoat is showing through. fortunately this can be corrected by giving it one more coat.

finally, i'm going to start recommending that folks start using semi-gloss or satin white as the upw basecoat.

I managed to control a bit of hotspotting by dusting the screen with a dust cloth - oops. Also, readjusted projector position. It's tolerable now. I wonder if a light sanding would help? Not going to do anything on that until I hear something, though.

Any thoughts on the seam?

Here's the screen. My plog will eventually have details.
rpearsey
Here's it in action during bright sunlight. There is an 8 x 8 foot window just to the left of the fireplace. It only has vertical blinds.

I didn't use tripod, hence the blurring.

The hotspotting is apparent but the larger white reflections I eventually traced to the glossy bottom trim of a window in the room.
rpearsey
Another daylight. It's a fair representation of what I was seeing. Picture is better in person.
rpearsey
And, and evening shot of son play World of Warcraft w/ lights on. Not the best shot. The camera way over emphasized the color of the ambient light. Screen is much more brilliant in person.
rpearsey
And, a close up of the paint, to show where my "troubles" are. You can see the amount of texture I'm dealing with on the left hand side.

I'm coming around to it and will certainly live with it for a while.

good help to others looking to follow in your footsteps...
the last screen does reveal some rolling technique issues... definitely too much texture from the roller.
the sheen is very apparent and rather puzzling... as i've dozens of screen with far a greater ratio of polycrylic in the mix... and never had the sheen i see on that last screenshot... especially on the right hand side of the screen.

i definitely think a quick hand sand with a 3M sanding, medium/fine grit, followed by a final finishing coat will work wonders for you.

Ok, I'm going to take a stab at doing this sometime this week. Hopefully by then my projector will be working again.

How long does the mix last? Will I need to get it reshook at Lowe's? Or can I stir it or shake it myself?

R
pb_maxxx
because of the polycrylic the paint will last for a long time it it's well covered.

just thoroughly stir the mix before starting. and if you have enough paint available to you, i'd recommend two light coats as opposed to just one.
rpearsey
I was not happy with the texture of my first effort and sanded the screen down and applied 2 more coats of the paint formula.

I'm still 100% satisfied with the results but this is b/c of execution on my part. In a few months I'm going to sand the screen down and redo it with a paint gun.

But, until then, the results are more than satisfactory and are better than what I had before.

There are more details in my plog. http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?s...0072&st=200

But here are photos taken at different times of the day -

4pm - The room gets direct sunlight at this time of day.
rpearsey
One more from 4pm
rpearsey
And, now this morning at 9am
rpearsey
And, 11am
rpearsey
For my own personal tastes -

At 4pm the projector is watchable but not if you want to sit and pay attention to the screen. However, the reason I put the projector in the main room was so I could putter around the house in the afternoon with a movie or concert on and for that it's more than watchable.

At 9am it is completely watchable and still is at 11:30.

This is so much of an improvement over my first project which became all but useless in this room until about 9pm during the summer. Now, we begin watching movies at around 6:30 or 7pm with little visual loss.

Next - early evening and night shots

And, now some night shots -

1st Lord of the Rings with All lights downstairs on (except for the spot light above the fireplace, because it's burnt out) -

I'm not using a tripod tonight. It's cd case on a cat tree. So, the pictures aren't as crisp as I'd like.
