My projector is native 800x480 and I can output at 800x600 and switch to 4:3 but this really just cuts off the sides. At 16:9 it appears to use full pixels.
Is there a way to output at 800x480 from a laptop? Should I use 800x600 and display with 16:9 for widescreen? I'd hate to lose the resolution on the sides.

Wel may need more details on your laptop.
Most video cards will allow widescreen resolutions, and if not, then software such as Powerstrip may be able to allow those kind of custom resolutions.

Your projector will scale so use any 16:9 resolution and the PJ will scale the resolution to fit.
