Full Version: Acoustically Transparent Screen Problem

I recently bought Dazian's Coated Celtic Cloth to make a screen that is acoustically transparent and noticed that there is too much bleed through of the light projected on the screen. Does anyone know of a blackout cloth that I could put behind the material that is also acoustically transparent? Or is there another idea like painting the wall behind the screen flat black that might do the job? I have a fixed screen with the center channel mounted in the dead center of the screen and wnat to keep it that way if possible.

Thanks in advance...

Can you describe "too much bleed through" ? Is it that you can see the wall and speakers behind the screen, or it is that the screen itself is too dim ? I've always been interested in this type of screen, but haven't done a lot of searching around for one. Can you take a close up pic of the screen material ? (i'm curious about hole size and spacing). I'm not sure you can do much about the picture being too dim without increasing the lumen output of the PJ. You might try white sheets of paper or aluminum foil in some areas to see if this would increase the brightness at all. I noticed that for the acoustically transparent screens, they behave as a grey screen would, as the effect of the holes in the screen is like a half-screen technique as used in newspaper printing. (white screen with small holes appears grey when you look at it from a distance, such that you can no longer makes out the individual holes in the screen). If the problem is you can see too much of the wall/speaker behind the screen, painting it black would certainly help... or at least a dark sheet placed behind the screen (and behind the speaker). I think putting another layer of material between the speaker and the existing screen will effect the speaker output too much.

Thanks Victor that helped a lot. There is soo much good stuff here I just hadn't got to that thread yet.

GadgetSmith-
you can see the wall and speakers behind the screen, it looks like painting flat black behind it is easiest for now since I already have the paint. My test run looked gorgeous once the room was totally dark, there seems to be little or no gain but since my HT room has no ambient light it will look great. My test run was in another room with ambient light and even still I was extremely impressed. I will try to post a picture tomorrow of the cloth. Dazian's material cost about $80 and I have way too much for my Approx. 54" X 96" screen.

Yea, the main discussion in the threads Victor posted was needing to have a dark background... that, and proper speaker selection for use with the screen.

You don't have to post pictures, I was just curious. Is this screen material what they refer to as "microperf" ? If you've got material left over after you do your screen, I'd be interested in some material to make some test panels... if you wanted to get rid of the left overs that is. wink.gif
