My mom and dad were looking for some theater seating for the home theater that is in the works. We were hoping to seat as many people as possible (max of 2 rows) I gave into the idea of actually theater seating instead of couches. I think it would work out to have a couch in the middle front, theater chairs for the rest of the seating area, and bean bags or something for any extra people who want to lay down in front.

I'm not sure where to look for seating. BestBuy has the seating I could get on discount, otherwise we need cheap, in price, hopefully not in quality. We have about 13' to work with in width, so I need side in either the middle or on both sides of the seating area. I'll continue my search, but anyone with some buying or shopping experience with this, any help is appreciated. Thanks.

If you can find an old theater they sometimes have seat units that have broken or worn out and they just replaced. Rather than pay the cost of disposal, they might just give them to you. I had an acquaintance in Mass who got two rows of eight chairs from a local stadium because they had cracked legs. He brought them to a welder and got them fixed and had some pretty nice stadium seating. He put them on his deck of all places. Guess it was good for family football games...

Personally, I would go with sectional furniture. The nice part about home theater is being able to hang out in super comfy furniture!

I like those, but I'm guessing they would cost more. Its really not my money that I am spending. My parents don't seem to have a budget for this new house, but I figure they do, somewhere .

I think this will start to turn more into a home theater, blocked off from the rest of the basement, which would reduce the ambient light from the rest of the room. I'm going to make extra room for the seating, making it wider as going longer won't convince me to make another row. My objective is to fit as many people as possible so that we do not have to leave someone out of the experience. I could only imagine.

I could actually see that happening, and my reasoning for as many seats as possible. The wider the better. Obviously to wide will cause problems. I do have the dimensions for the maximum amount of room I could afford to take up with the theater in my HTPLOG. 15' 6" x 14'. I figure I'll have an isle on both sides of the seating. What would be a good width for the isles? It would be nice to get 5 seats a row, but that would require at least a single isle theater and smaller seats. Otherwise I will put gaming chairs in the very front for extra people. They are very comfy, but it might be a bit of a look upward. Your thoughts?

My gal and I are a little split as to what our ideal furniture would be. While I really like the comfort of a recliner, she prefers a couch, so that she can sprawl out with her legs on my lap. We currently have a reclining loveseat, which is kind of the best of both worlds, if a little tight lengthwise.

If I had an unlimited budget I might consider going with some of these Provence Home Theater chairs by Relax The Back.


They're a store whose Zero Gravity chairs are focused around getting the body to the position that it naturally conforms to in zero gravity conditions, which results in the minimizing the amount of stress on your body that gravity's constant pull is inflicting. If you have a bad back (which I do) these things are a dream. Sadly, they're ridiculously expensive, too.

These chairs are sectionally designed, where you can have a single chair (with two armrests), two chairs (one single chair with two armrests, one chair with one armrest that snuggles into the single chair), three chairs (one center single chair with two armrests, two outer chairs with one armrest each) and so on.

These are niiiiiiice, imo.


EDIT: I just realized that this post isn't really in keeping with the initial post of Prof. Oak's parents' theater seating, but thought it was more of a general Home Theater Seating thread when I saw the topic. Still, aren't these chairs ridiciulously nice?

Take a look at Berklne's chairs. They have some really neat chairs and can custom make them with whatever type of fabric you want. We just got ours. Now I gotta figure out how to get them downstairs.

If you have a university or something nearby, you might want to check and see if they have some sort of surplus program. Here at NC State, they sell all kinds of furniture, computers, electronics, machinery, etc. on the cheap. The only reason I bring this up is they had recently done a renovation of a basketball arena and there are LOTS of stadium seating to be had.

I am watching movies right now with a lcd panel and OHP but will buy a projector on or around Black Friday, maybe from Lumenlab. i want to see a result before i buy however so that will be a serious obstacle
