A burn-in is an initial burn on the lamp. Basically, the first time you turn on the lamp it will "set" the metal salts in the lamp, and set up conditions for future burns. For best light and longest lamp life, it's best if the first time the lamp is turned on it gets up to full temperature. I personally recommend at least 2 hours for this, and some people might even go higher. Also, the lamp should be in the same position and orientation that it will be in when installed in your projector. This is so that when the salts settle down, they will do so in the same way once installed in your projector.

By doing this, you will ensure the fewest starting problems with your lamp and good lamp longevity.
