I've been searching for a good deal on a small high resolution lcd, but haven't had a lot of luck.
A four inch or under LCD that is 640 X 480 minimum is hard to find on my budget, or to find anywhere for that matter.

Just by sheer luck at about 2:30 AM I stumbled across an 8 inch VGA LCD Monitor that has RCA inputs and a TV tuner that is on sale for $85.00. The specs aren't the greatest, but they aren't bad. I found it at V800 8" TFT LCD Car Monitor TV Receiver .

Of course I only run across these deals when I'm dead flat stinking broke and I can't get it. sad.gif

I've learned an incredible amount from the guys here on the LL forum (and the DIY Audio one, too) so I wanted to pass on the info, so if one of you make a projector from one of these monitors, I expect a detailed PLOG on it, OK?

I have no clue if they're easily strippable or anything. I hope they're great.

Great find it looks like it has potential for a small form factor PJ. After a quick search on google I found another site that sells it for $99.00 so it will still be available at a decent price if mini-box somehow runs out of their stock.

I bought and i was able to strip it . i had to buy an extension cable. I was able to use it and it worked fine I was still modifing my box for better lighting and then something happend ???? and It stopped working. I could have messed something up by touching something on the board and caused a staic shock. Don't know what happened. Too bad though cause it was going good for a while. I would say it is def. worth getting.

You can find some realy cheap 4"9" LCD off portable DVD players:
http://electronics.listings.ebay.com/DVD-P...ListingItemList

And you can get an even better deal if the hinge is broken, the battery is missing, the backlight is out, and/or the DVD player itself isn't working but the LCD is.

Searching for "as is" will get you good results:
http://electronics.search.ebay.com/as-is_P...gZ1QQsofocusZbs

Just make sure the controller board and the LCD are okay and that it comes with an AC adaptor and remote if applicable (you can't get to the setup menu without it on some of these players).

Also, make sure it's got video in and audio in. Preferrably, in and out on both like mine:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...A%3AIT&rd=1

After that you can probably get a good halogen PJ lamp for $15 new or from an old overhead projector then just get you lenses from LL and you're on your way for under $100 so far.

Man, I hate to tell you, but the resolution information on your DVD player on EBay is bogus. It doesn't have 720 X 480, it is 400 x 234 pixels. See Amazon.com info on Audiovox D1705 . Also search this forum for D1705.

I figure they got that information from page 30 of the manual that says "DVD video format: Horizontal 720 pixel, vertical 480 pixel (NTSC)". Unfortunately, thats not the resolution of the LCD.

Cheers Mohanned some good search tips...!!

That's interesting. Either way it's really crisp and clean, and I've already run several resolutions on it when I connected to my PC - I'll be posting screens later in my PLOG if you're interested.

If it says it's 720x480 how do you figure it's not? Just by Amazon? If so, then it might be wrong - I've seen the specs on Amazon wrong all the time - plus the listing on there could be a different year (though I'm sure they'd have different model numbers unlike cars & years).

This says it's 480i, which if I'm not mistaken means 720x480:
http://www1.epinions.com/pr-Audiovox_D1705...lay_~full_specs

As does this:
http://www.bizrate.com/dvdplayers/pid87593...nformation.html

And this:
http://www.bestwebbuys.com/electronics/Aud...l?isrc=e-search

But those could all be getting their info from the manual, which brings me to another point.. what?? Isn't it what it says it is in the manual?

Please enlighten me. huh.gif ph34r.gif

Unfortunately, I'd have to concur with this. I went down the same route a little while ago and bought a Panasonic DVD-L50 advertised with slightly less total pixels (~280,000) and after a few people here suggested that was an RGB figure (meaning resolution, divided by 3) I checked with Panasonic. They confirmed it was roughly 320 x 240. All subsequent research has indicated that very very few portable DVD players have resolutions exceeding even 400 lines horizontal. But hey, if it looks good to you, that's what mattters.

Right, but still, I don't know why/how you concur or why you think it's not 480i when several resources say it is.

I'll settle this in a little bit when I do a resolution test on it.

I hope that your resolution test confirms what you think the resolution is, that would be great.
When I google Audiovox D1705 I get about half and half on the resolution.
Since NTSC DVD standard is 720 X 480 for any DVD player, I keep thinking that Audiovox is pulling a fast one by saying "DVD video format: Horizontal 720 pixel, vertical 480 pixel (NTSC)" in the manual and not really stating what the LCD resolution is directly.

Good luck with your test.

Ahh, okay. Yeah, that's quite possible I suppose. I'll let you know when I've confirmed or disproved.

Alright, I think people are getting mixed up here. Ok, there's two different resolutions on this thing. One is the resolution of the signal being sent to the LCD from the DVD player. Since all DVD players comply with 720 x 480i at a MINIMUM, 480i is nothing more than the signal the DVD player puts out. Now the LCD is a "display device". basically think of it as a tv you're hooking the dvd player up to. The LCD is only as high resolution as the manufacturer wants to make it. Most likely, this one has a resolution of something like 900 x 240 or something rediculous. This actually translates to 300 x 240 (manufacturers like to trick people into thinking they have high resolution displays but in actuality the 900 is counting each of those pixels 3 times, for the three layers of LCD material used to build the screen) This low resolution screen can display any signal put into it (as long as it's a 720 x 480i or progressive scan signal) but it will use pixel blending to blur lines together. Technically you can output higher resolutions from a computer video card s-video out, but that requires even more pixel blending which would cause a nasty looking screen. I hope that was helpful! RECAP: Most portable dvd players are lower resolution! Most manufacturers trick you by counting the three layers of LCD material (3 x 300 x 240 AKA 900 x 240)! The signal they refer to as "DVD Resolution" or something like that, is the resolution of output that the built in DVD player is capable of, NOT the LCD's actual resolution! KEEP ON TRUCKIN WITH THEM DIY LCD PROJECTORS!
