Any dvd rom that is capable of playback at 4x is fine for playing. Most of the time when a DVD player "sucks" its because of other processes interupting the flow of data from the DVD player. Try shutting down a few of your running programs. If it continues, make sure your rom is in DMA mode. If not, then post the exact symptoms, system specifications and OS and we will see what we can do.
