I used a spoon rest from Big W about $5.00. Its 100mm in diam and it sits in a heavy wire frame. Suitable for the skinny double ended globes.

Soare napkin holders from Ikea, and last time I looked they weren't stocking them anymore.

Hey griff just wondering if the LCD monitor that u bought off ebay will be able to project tv without a line doubler or all this other crap. i want the same as u from my projector, no computer, just DVD, XBOX and TV. Any Ideas?
pbrow1
Something interesting appeared on ebay the other day, so I got one. It's in a shop in Underwood, Qld (south Bris)

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...item=5797554422

Set Top Box which is a PC (non-intel CPU). Runs XP or Linux. Has TV tuner (but unable to find correct XP drivers  ). VGA or TV out. Spare IDE port (but no space for 2nd drive). USB ports (so I can put on a USB DVD player). TV like remote control. Remote KBD with trackball. 2 Network ports. S-Video in & out. etc... cool.gif

I like the idea of recording TV to HDD, editing out the ad's, then burning to DVD for later use. Also like all of the other potential functions.

It looks like a "Epox: EP-160A" but has different VGA & therefore video capture doesn't work. It is very small & would suit a lounge room very well.

Whaddaya rekon?

G'Day All

An elementary question, I'm afraid - I'll try to be more brain-taxing next time.

I'm confused by the figures given on the Digital Broadcasting Australia website http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?sectionID=15

They state that the HD picture formats in use in Australia are either:

576 lines by 720 pixels (ABC, SBS, Seven, Prime)
or
1080 lines by 1440 pixels (Nine, Ten, WIN, NBN & Southern Cross Ten, Tas Digital)

Neither of these seem to equate to a 16:9 picture.

720:576 = 16:12.8
and
1440:1080 = 16:12

I'm obviously missing something here. blink.gif Can someone please run me through the correct number of pixels X:Y that I should be looking for in an LCD panel for an LL project? I'd prefer to source a panel around 17" widescreen (but am open to suggestions) to use with the forthcoming LL PRO lens stuff in a folded arrangement.

The higher resolution transmissions (1080 lines, 1440 pixels) are available in my area (Dubbo, NSW), and I intend to use the projector for pretty much everything... Telly, DVD, PC gaming, ....

Help, suggestions and corrections all appreciated...

Cheers.

I'm obviously missing something here.

TV pixels ain't square. smile.gif They're 1.33:1, so 1440 horizontal TV pixels are the same width as 1920 square pixels (and 1920:1080 gives you your 16:9).

Noticed above the comments about recording TV to HDD etc and thought I'd mention, for those who may not know, that there is an Australian XP Media Center community available at www.xpmediacentre.com.au.

All we talk about all day is building machines for MCE. MCE is HTPC software written by Microsoft that's rather nice to use (specially with a PJ!) once it's configured...

I use mine daily for recorded TV, downloaded TV, DVD's, music, pictures etc etc... All remote controlled and dead easy to use.

Head over there and check it out if you need something to complement your finished projector.

Some of you are already aware having arrived at LL via there! Enjoy your PJ's smile.gif

Cheers,
Arkay.

hello from Brisbane,

Since finding this site last week i have been unable to stop researching and hopefully one day soon will start building one of these projecters.

Before i do though i was wondering if anyone lives in brisbane and has built one as i would love to come and have a look in person to see if it is really worth all the fuss.

I was thinking of something simple with a 15 inch lcd, this seems to be the least expensive. (any thoughts appreciated).

Cheers

Keep up the good work.

Hi Cabe1000

And welcome, I came across the forums by chance about a month ago and now have started building my projector after receiving my parts from LL ordered lenses , reflector fans through them got a light from a mate and a monitor (ebay) and am really enjoying building it. and may even enjoy it more when its finished.

I did start with a simple design like a Haas type but realise after making a mock up out of cardboard a vertical would suit our needs better so am working on a vertical folded with a mirror inside, the only problem I have is finding the time.

Good luck with your projector and I hope you keep us updated with your progress

Am aiming for a vertical PJ & may stick it in a DIY R2D2. R2D2's Plans are in yahoo, but need modding for PJ use. Would be nice for R2's inbuilt hologram PJ to be my PJ output... Dunno if dimensions are compatible though. PM me if ya want.

Hey guys,

I am new to the forum and was wondering if you could maybe help me out. I started my projector a month ago and have almost finished it.

I am not 100% sure of the wiring for the lamp, I think it is ok, but want to be certain.

The fan is already connected to it's own power supply so here I am only looking to power the lamp. I just bought all the components needed and have wired it all up. Could any body check the following pics and let me know if this is ok?

The wiring is based on the diagram provided with the ballast: Click here to view

The general view of the wiring is here: Click

The detail view is here : Click

Thanks guys

Here is a copy of my wiring diagram.

You need to wire up you fans so that if they are turned off accidently the globe will be turned off also at the same time to prevent overheating.

G'Day to all!

I too am from Australia (Adelaide in fact) and have been following LL projectors for a while now but only just recently become a premium member.

I want to start building of my projector soon. I will be using a 17" LCD (coz i cant get 15" ones anymore locally). I have a question for those couple of people that are using one of those AVerTV Box 9 things (or anyone else that may be able to help.. please.. ):

I have read on some other threads that some LCD's cant handle some resolutions natively (like 1280x720), so therefore you apparently need a scaler (or some such device). Is a 'scaler' still needed with the AVerTV Box, or am i just getting confused?
Does it work good for widescreen movies (eg from a standard DVD player)? and also good for SD TV (or from an XBOX for example?

thanks for your help smile.gif

Hi to all,

I'm Willy from Canberra.
I started reading this forum some years ago and I find it very interesting.
Now, I think I almost completed all the parts needed to build my own projector.
I already started the construction of the box and I'm very impressed with the
initial outcome. I'll post some of the photos soon.

MH lamps don’t run directly from the mains so finding a 240v version is not necessary. But you will need to find ballast that will run your choice of lamp and it will need to be 240vac.

Hi, yet another Aussie here.

You need a ballast. I'm in Sydney and have bought one on Ebay (used) from a hydro seller for around $60.00 pickup only. You could check in your local area for hydroponic suppliers. They usually come in an enclosure containing a choke, capacitor and ignitor. Make sure that the ballast is compatible with your lamp ie. if you intend to use a 400W metal halide you need a 400W ballast for for a halide(not sodium or mercury).

As for a lamp I also bought one on ebay but check serial number with manufacturers specs to see that its suitable (see other post for best specs), also some of these are very long so check it will fit in your pj box and have centre of arc on centre of lcd. One more thing, these are made to be mounted either base up or down or unniversal (any position) so make sure the bulb you buy suits your intended position.

Good Luck.

Do you mean the Hydro Masta seller? If so it is the coil/core type. That's who I bought mine from. Trevor is the guys name and he was pretty helpful. If you email him he may post it for you but there're fairly heavy, postage could be dear.

Yes, probably the same. You'll need a lamp holder as well, I see they have those too. Are you using a 15 or 17inch lcd? That lamp is probably around 290mm-too long for a 15inch in horizontal position. Being unniversal you maybe able to mount it diagonally to keep it centre of the panel. Have you got a reflector yet? I have a sylvania small envelope lamp, it's cost nearly $100.00. I'm just about start a new pj project after I accidentally and stupidly killed my 15in panel. Think I"ll go for a 17in HD this time.

Good to see another Aussie in the forums.

This gear works brilliantly. Last time I checked the whole lot: Lamp, Ballast, Ignitor, Capacitor, Base, Silicon High Temp (205deg C) wiring, 5 Amp circuit breaker was about $250

From Brissie and its great to see alot of Aussies taken interest in this DIY project. A couple of years ago I tested a LCD screen on a OHP with fantastic results and have been hooked ever since. Just about finished my project, have good results. Check out my plog shortly..

Just a slight problem with heating at the moment. Project can only run for approx 20minutes before it gets to hot.

Looks like i need to buy some more fans.

I have the lumenlab 220 & 330 15" lenses if anyone wants to make an offer on them.

I eventually went 17" Lcd with 3d lenses and they are superb.....so no need for the standard 15" ones..

good luck everyone......

Hey guys,

I might be selling my lumenlab rig if anyone is interested.
Reason for sale is that i'm basically bored of the big image........ would prefer an decent sized LCD.

It is basically set up, but still requires some adjustments (detailed further on).

What i've got:
Samsung 510n LCD
Standard 15" LL lens set
Tempered Glass
240v LL ballast + 400w bulb
MDF box
2 pullnpush fans with fan controller + temperature gauge
I can also give you quite a bit of blackout cloth (purchased from spotlight)... enough for a screen, about 3 - 4 metres of it

It is set up currently, but not in a permanent configuration (wood work not finished (ie light leakage) and lens frames need to be glued in. But it works well and gives a pretty damn good image at the moment.

I'm probably looking for about $400 (thats about fair, as it cost quite a bit more than that).

I'm located in Sydney... if anyone's interested, email me at ankur.badhwar@gmail.com

Does anyone know of places to get LCD projection panels for overhead projectors in Australia? International postage is a killer :-)

Regards,

Bitphaarked
For lamps and ballasts, google "RS Components" (in Sydney - Smithfield) do a search for HQI 400W bulbs and there are endless data sheets (and prices) for all these types of bulbs listed on this site used for these projects. They are cheaper if buying in bulk, so if there were a group of you after the same setup, it may work out cheaper if co-ordinated properly. I bought my FFC cable extensions and connector from there just recently. (do a search by "FFC") They just about have every electrical component possible. (The way I'm going on, you think I own the joint)

I think someone said they got some lexan from Bunnings if there is one nearby.

Oztang got a piece of uv & ir glass from Rosco (check his plog). It was pretty expensive tho.

I have a sheet of borosilicate glass for a heat shield. It will take plenty of heat, no worries but I dont think it shields UV.

The bulb I am using is supposed to have "UV stop" so I am hoping that will do the trick.

Another option is tempered glass but when I enquired it was also going to be rather dear.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dan, If u really r into it get the mega kit. much easier to do. If u want lexan and tempered glass go for sydneyglass.com ,and to do your box pls proceed with caution. i spent more then the proj for building meterial. so with caution and much thinking. pro kit is good for 17 inch. and LG 1750 is easy to strip but with AG be very very careful . do not do it b4 u watch atleast 50-60 movies. i bought my light for john n turk with everything 188 AUD. now up to u man. i am building my final box tomorrow, thanks,Tanji
