I just had a look at the user manual and there is also PAL B/G which is what Australia come under and when you first use the TV Box 9 you set up the TV System and the user manual shows you which one to pick. There is in fact about 9 different TV Systems in the World and by far the PAL B/G is used by the most number of countries.

Hi to all just another Newbie in Queensland. I have spent days and days reading the forums. Its all good. lots of ideas. I havent bought any parts yet still looking. Can anyone tell me if the AverTVbox9 will hook straight up to the monitor or does it have to go through a computer first.
Any help on this will be most welcome Thanks

Hi Crankie
The Aver TVBox9 connects directly to the monitor via a VGA cable. That is the idea is that you don't need a computer to connect to the projector.
It can also be used as a TV tuner for your computer.
If you go here you can get a few specs.

The AU store will be stocking a new lamp setup in a few weeks (240v version of the "Ultimate Light Kit").. Hopefully this will fix the "gap" in Australian lamps

excellent, sounds good,
any idea on a rough price????
Hi all, another aussie looking around for ideas. I'm about to start on an 8" using this
LCD and have also found this
Euro site selling 250 and 400 watt OSRAM HQI-TS 400W Daylight - HM and the specs sound very good (from what i've read)

maybe brain could comment on these globes. If anyone is looking for new hardware, eg. BenQ FP567S new $290.00 AU (out of stock now but should be back about the middle of the month) or almost any other new hardware items at good prices ex Melbourne, let me know.
Thanks, Trucks

The TV Box9 is excellent as a tuner. On the projector running TV through it is as good as looking at a Plasma screen only onto a 8' x 5' screen.
When I first got it I connected it to an old HP CRT monitor to tune the TV channels as I hadn't finished the projector and it was like looking at standard definition digital TV.
You must bear in mind though I have run my whole house in RG6 Quad shielded cable with F connectors through out. I run Hi Gain anteneas because I am 150 klms from the transmission towers with a mast head amplifier on the anteneas.
I then run that into a VCR and then into a distribution amplifier and then into a two way splitter which runs into a 4 way and a 6 way splitter and then to 10 TV points throughout the house.
This allows me to run TV, Satelite TV and Pay TV to all 10 points from one point using only one set top satelite tuner.

You can buy it from Spotlight Fabrics. It come in two sizes 1500mm wide @ about $11.00/m and 2400mm wide @ about $30.00/m. The 2400mm wide comes as a made up curtain lining.
It is called 3 pass block out curtain lining.

Hi,
I got my hands on some polycarbonate and was wondering if anyone could confirm/deny wheter it would be acceptable to use in the PJ (instead of the tempered glass).
It is 6mm thick, Hyzod (aka MAKROLON I think) 'None tougher' by Sheffield Plastics . I plan on also using the LL UV filter as well.
Whilst mentioning this, I was wondering what gap are people leaving between their polycarbonate and UV filter? I was thinking 10mm would do. Also I noticed the UV filter is smaller than the collimator lense. So does the mounting of the UV filter block some of the light hitting the lense and hence affect the projection? Is this a problem.
Thanks in advance.
Terminal
Apr 4 2005, 03:17 AM
The UV filter is thin and flexible, so it's best mounted on something strong like polycarbonate.
If it's polycarbonate, it should be fine. Other plastics may or may not cope. So long as you're monitoring the temperature you don't have to worry. If the plastic can't take the heat (polycarbonate can) it will break or crack.
beekeeper
Apr 6 2005, 11:10 PM
Thanks terminal,
So in that case you dont have a gap between the UV filter and the Polycarbonate. If that is the case, what do you use to keep the UV filter in place? Do you glue it to the polycarbonate or what?
Sorry if it is a silly question but the UV filter is not mentioned in the guide and no one seems to go into this in great detail in their plogs.
Thanks in advance.

Whatever holds it and doesn't get in the way of projection.. glue is fine but ONLY on the very edges. clips are a good way to hold it on because they are removable, you just need to align them so they won't be in the lightpath.

Hi Ankur
I don't think you will get a much better price than that on the Benq. I paid $430 back in September last year and that was the very best price I could get at the time.
If you look back in this thread there is a post I made about a lighting kit I priced from an Electrical wholesaler called Rexel at about $300 I think. any way there is a copy of the quote posted.

Bazza,
That is amazing. They have dropped $135 in the last 6-7 months?? I have seen 12ms 19" Phillips ones going for $600.00 as well.
Makes me want to wait another 6 months to see what happens to the monitor market... I guess they get faster and cheaper. I heard that Europe has been dumping their surplus here as no one wants a 15" anymore.
So maybe a long wait for the "glassware" may not be a bad thing...
My long wait is not born of prudence - just poverty!

G'day boys, about time I got involved. Have just bought a BENQ 567s for $271 from Qld IT at Castlmaine St Milton, Brisbane. Goto Ausprices.com for the latest on what monitors are about and what they are going for.
Have priced up a lighting setup for $149, bulb included in Brisbane.
Components are:
Ballast - Atco OGB400-100 $35.00
Ignitor Atco ATIG-14 $22.50
Capacitor - 20mf $9.50
Lamp Holder - SL1400-01 $10.50
Lamp - Venture MH400/U/ED28 $57.50,
Tax $13.50
Total $148.50
Bulb maybe a bit large but at present all is compatible and should fit.
Picked up the ballast and bits as a tray second hand for $45. Ex hydroponics setup. Doesn't get better than that. Will buy the bulb next week.
Same story as the rest of you boys, once I convinced the minister for war and finance of the merits of this PJ she ok'd it. Took some time though. Stay tuned.

Hi there
Woah! looks like there is a lot of aussies here already!
I've just got my plans, so before I go and score an LCD I should ask what's a good choice and, does a lower response time (say below 16ms) have any significant effect on the performance of the projected image (probably during camera panning and such)
Cheers!

Hi All,
I'm in Perth.. I've just started ordering all of the parts for my projector.
I have ordered the s15 lens kit and the 240v lighting kit (with electronic ballast) from the LL US store.
I'm hoping to get a CMV 520D from somewhere local.
Do any of you have any tips on wiring the cooling system up?
I'm going to use a 240v 120mm fan, but would like to have it wired up to some sort of countdown timer, or thermostat type of switch so that it stays running for a little while after the unit is shut down.
I can't find any useful info in the forums for stuff available from Australia (or for 240v)...
Any ideas? What have you all done for cooling / wiring in general?

Hey Liam77
I found a place that'll order the 520D in queensland www.sunshinecomputers.com.au they do it for $367 delivered. I was going to go that route til Bazza suggested the Benq, sounds cool to me ta!! I saw some new benqs that had response times similar to that of CRT monitors( around 6 to 8 ms)...surely that would have a positive effect on the "moving" projected image right?
Cheers

Laz,
I like the sound of the DVI input on the CMV. I think that the projected image would be a fair bit sharper than by using a VGA input...

Hi guys,
Been doing a little shopping myself.
I paid $66 for the same lamp as noobatron so dude, dont feel ripped off! I got it from the same place, middy's in Melb.
Got the blast and lamp holder from www.hydroshop.com.au. That cost me $137 inc delivery. I have not tried it yet cause I am still bulidng the box (am in very early stages).
Also got two fans from PC case gear. They are the evercool ones 100 cfm for $16.50 each. Also got a temperature and fan monitoring device from pc case gear which cost me around $30. Again have not tried it.
Now to the LCD. I have been having problems getting this. Everyone seems out of stock. Last time I called infinity they said they were out of stock and I tried ordering it from a few online places and they were all out of stock. When did you order yours noobatron? Not sure what is going on there maybe everyone is building projectors?? Anyway that price ($266) is the cheapest I have seen so where I will buy it from (provided they get stock soon!!). I know this has been mentioned before but I will mention it again for any newbies, go to www.ausprices.com.au and search for benq 557 you will get a bunch under $300.
Finally what are people doing for reflectors? I know bazza and Mr burns used a soup ladle but that was good taipans set up but I dont think that good for the single ended globe we are using? I bought a mixing bowl from DJ in melb for about $9 but it has a flat spot that I am a little concered about. The other thing I have been investigating is metal spinners. Anyone tried these with sucess? Also could anyone tell me what a hot spot is and how you get it? I presume it it is a bright region of the projected image but dont know how you would get it.
Anyway better end, post is already to long to deter people from reading!
Thanks.

g'day beekeeper,
I ordered the BenQ lcd through infinity. I say ordered because they themselves were out of stock and had to order one down from queensland. So if you're really keen on an LCD, place an order and they should be able to help you out.
The flat spot (i think) comes from a reflector with a flat bottom like that mixing bowl you brought. I'm not sure so anyone fix me up if i'm wrong.
My Ballast came today and i'm very impressed with it. The construction looks very strong, the casing acts like a huge heatsink with many fins going all the way around and it has two ac 6cm fans to boot. It arrived extremely fast (shipped on Thursday) and was extrememely well packaged with bubble wrap (the ballast itself then the original ballas box) and that box put into a heavy duty brown box and padded with shreaded paper. Must say the guys at Anartelle are very efficient and do a great job.
I have pictures of the ballast if anyone is interested.

TOUGHENED GLASS ??? Anyone in Brisbane had any luck, best I could do was $60 for a piece 320mm x 280mm x 5mm for toughened glass from O'Briens Glass. Apparently no one in Brisbane makes it. For anyone in Brisbane it must be ordered in from Sydney with a 14 day turnaround. $60 is the minimum they will charge.

I bought mine in Tamworth NSW for $15.00 for 4mm glass from a company called Capitol Glass and it had to come from Sydney.
Try some of the smaller glass suppliers or aluminium window people. O'Briens are a ripoff. There is a fair bit of toughened glass used for kitchen splash backs. The only problem with it is once it is toughened it can't be cut again.

I ordered TEMPERED glass from my local glass shop at Gatton today. Will take 3 days and costs $30. Not bad I thought for a country town.
I am in the Lockyer valley, Queensland, signed up today but have been looking at the whole projection idea for a couple of weeks. Keen to build a projector so I can stop thinking of building one and again be able to get some sleep! Just can't stop thinking about it.

We stock Polycarbonate ( aka "Lexan" ) in the AU store, which can be used instead of tempered glass:

Is Lexen just a fancy name for perspex?

What shape is that?(ED28. These codes for size/shape make no sense to me) Is anyone able to get double ended MH400w? Is anyone able to find an e-ballast? or is everyone settling for coil ones? The lighting seems to be the hardest part to find in australia.
