As a council you can use only one ffc cable for that and one ffc connector to make the extension with NO soldering required, i did so and now my horizontal folded PJ is a real BEAST! (my only problem is my RS mirror, but if i could get the hands on a fs it would be perfect like the benchun's,anyway i did not notice this problem too much).

ffc could be found in any of those old cd-rom reader that are to be discarded.
at their internals you can find a ffc cable with the same pitch as the one of lcds.

take off the connector of the ffc from the cdrom using carefully a cutter together with the cable.
the cable may have more pins but this is not a problem, use a metal ruler and a cutter to cut this cable along and get the number of pins you need,in mine 20..Then insert the free side of the lcd's ffc together with the cabel you prepared at the same connector you took off from the cdrom and then the other side of the cable you prepared to the ffc connector on the lcd.Remember before turning on the lcd check carefully with a multimeter for open and specially for shorts or you may burn everything.the pins of the ffc cable of the lcd should lay over the pins of the cable you prepared inside the jointure connector which serves only to keep them tight one against the other.

always check carefully that the pitch of both cable coincide!!! (0.5mm)

use a magnifying glass to check!!!

Good thinking! Turns out my CD/floppy drives have FCC's with more spacing though sad.gif

If you need 0.5mm pitch cable, then RS part 459-1976 should work for you, note that there's a minimum order of 5.

For the sockets (to join 2 leads with - you can just sandwich two together pin to pin in one socket) RS part 332-3277 should work, there's a minimum order of 10.

So:

Check http://www.rs-components.nl

FFC connector
rs order code: 332-3277
20 pin connector 0.5mm pitch

Aantal Prijs: priced EACH
1+ EUR0.64

FFC cable
rs order code : 459-1976
20 pin cable 152mm length, 0.5mm pitch

Aantal Prijs: priced EACH
1+ EUR1.07

Total : 0.64+1.07= 1.71 EUR

And use the method described in my above post.

sorry the minimum order of 5 and 10 respectively was for rs-components greece but for rs-components netherlands there is no minimum quantities so you can buy only 1 ffc and 1 socket.

I ordered the cable I needed (16 x 0.5mm) and a connector at Farnell In One. I was able to squeeze them together and they appeared to be aligned but I forgot to check for short circuits... I was able to turn the LCD's power indicator led on, but when I switched it off again it didn't react anymore, even with the extension removed sad.gif

This project could get a lot more expensive than I'd anticipated.. I almost burned through the glass of the MH lamp too this weekend (it melted after 20 seconds without cooling)

Ok, here is my attempt at this with Photos. I have the entire thing stripped and have in fact found the FFC cable and its connectors. Next question is how do i delicately remove the connector from the board? with the razor blade you can see in the pic?

I thing this is a great idea by the way. I just have to get that connector piece off the board then, I can stick both my FFC cables in that slot thereby making it a coupler ......right?

I would rather have everyones oppinion , just in case this is a idiots errand.

I would of added these pics here so that you could see them without clicking on a link, but there is no way to do it in this forum with picasa photos. Basically, the administrators should seriously consider adding this google picasa support for these forums.

well, i went ahead and finished it after thinking about it for a minute or two... turns out it is a totally different size then mine which you can see in these photos.

The smallest FFC is the one I need to use. The larger one is the one I stole from old cdrom. If anyone could use this ribbon let me know. It is a 15 pin. and it seems alittle bit larger then .05.
