I have decided to rebuild my enclosure after a year of use. I noticed yesterday when I took the lexan out that is had severly darkened. In the center was a perfect green circle that matched the size of the reflector I was using. What is more interesting is on one side of the lexan the surface was falling apart, you could easily scratch layers off. The other side was normal. I know I installed the lexan in the right direction, I just wonder if the UV filter gave way. The lexan easily dims the picture by at least 30% if not more.

I have been using the ushio pulse strike lamp and a norpro reflector.

My fresnels are perfect.

Do you think over time this just needs to be replaced?
How long have you been able to use your lexan?

Interesting finding.
Anyway, lexan is cheap so I recommend you to give your old one a break and buy a new one.

This is a longshot, but bear with me...

When you say you had the lexan installed properly, are you absolutley sure ? I remember about 1.5 years ago when I got my PJ up and running I bought lexan from Home Depot. The HD sticker and white lexan protective coating had differing statements about which side to expose to the light. In actual fact, the side with the green protective coating should have been facing the lamp.

...like I said, a longshot. smile.gif

how close what your lexan to the lamp ?

very interesting... someone just asking about UV protection too...

cheers,

I still have the original piece of lexal in my projector and it is still as clear as day 1. I'm guessing wither a bad piece of lexan XL10 or too close to the bulb (excessive heat).

I would say it was about 5 or 6 inches from the bulb. It didnt warp any. Maybe I did have it backwards. Either way, just thought people might want to check their lexan once a year or so if they use their projector alot.

You might want to use tempered glass as the primary heat shield and Lexan as the UV filter.

I'm using lexan because it's cheap. smile.gif

Since Lexan usually does not have any discoloration problems, I wonder if it's heat + the UV coating that's turning green. Perhaps "backwards" is the right way after all for our usage. After all, we don't really care if the lexan gets relatively brittle, since it's not somewhere where it will have to withstand potentially repeated hard strikes (we hope)

It's a theory. I'm budgeting for replacing the lexan about once a year. I think that I can splurge the $12. wink.gif
