As I see it, there are two ways to do this;
1. Roll the topbar where the cloth is attached, this would require more pulling power than option 2.
2. Roll the bottom bar. This would require more pulleys and more "precision engineering".

Has anyone tried making on themselves?

Also... is it even a viable option to make a rollup screen on your own with the LL blackout cloth?

I looked into it as an option. The thing that will be most difficult will be the rolling. If you get any creases in the cloth when you roll up, they dont come out too easy. My solution to this was to heavily weight the bottom bar with something that doesnt flex. Iron pipe was the favorite. Lots of folks have doena winding screen. Windshield wiper motors seem to be popular for this.

You might want to hold out though. LumenLab is about to start stocking some pretty nice screens at very reasonable prices.. Might be just what you are looking for.

Thanks for the headsup for the screen... although it is too late, I bought some secondhand BO cloth in the trading forum along with some other stuff. 2.8x2.6 meters... might as well put it to good use.

I will look into the iron pipe thing, thanks.

I found an old metal cased roll up projection screen at a second hand shop that was $5.00. The original screen inside was not in good shape so, I took it apart and removed the screen from the roller. Using the original screen as a template I cut blackout cloth to the same size. I attached the blackout cloth to the roller using contact adhesive( the kind that you glue laminate to counter tops). After drying I reassembled the roller and metal case with the blackout cloth attached. It works perfect. rolls up when not in use and keeps the cloth fairly tight while viewing. Here are some pixs of the screen. We keep it on the floor in front of the entertainment center only because thats what works for us. It could be hung or hidden in other circumstances.

attached a small chain with a hook to the back of the center and pull it out to hook the top of the screen when we use it
