Full Version: Cutting a lcd panel...is it possible?

I wonder if it is possible to buy a 15in lcd, use the monitors controls to shrink the image, and cut out the remaining glass with a diamond saw or maybe another method. The result would be a higher resolution lcd panel that is small in size. I know this is not probably possible but I notice cracked lcds still display a image so removing the glass and the lcd functioning might be possible. I could be wrong but lcds panel contain mercury and aresenic so this may be very dangerous or deadly and probably should not be attempted, but I was just curious if this was possible.

That is soooooo far out of the realm of DIY though that it makes me dizzy just thinking about it. wacko.gif

This is actually an awesome idea, I wonder if it would decrease the resolution, that would be my only concern....

The only problem with cutting down the lcd is, that while you will save space, you are reducing the number of pixels, therefore, reducing the picture quality significantly. If you cut 1/3 the size off the lcd, you lose more than 50% of your pixels.

You would kill the quality.

A dell laptop WUXGA 15.4" screen has a resolution of 1920x1080. A 23" WUXGA lcd monitor can also do 1920x1080. The laptop screen is smaller in size yet it provides the same resolution as the larger lcd monitor screen.

So, if I were to use the monitor controls to shrink the image on the screen then the resolution of that image would decrease?

Yes, put in simple terms, the pixels of the monitor will always remain the same size wether you shrink the image using the monitor controls or not.

The image that once spanned across 1920 pixels, when shrinked would only span say 1024 pixels.

If you were to expand this image to the same size as the original, but only using the same 1024 pixels, the pixels would be larger than the original ones resulting in a blockier image!

You know I think lcd's have all the information feeding in from the sides, if you cut them off nothings going to get there.

It might be possible to cut it, but you definately won't increase the resolution - as mentioned above, you will actually decrease it.

No.

1: The edges of the lcd are hermedily sealed, air moisture will mess the liquid cristals + they will seep
2: the controler bridges on the edge will be cut apart so it may have bad effects if you do. the edge
of most LCDs contain circutry and the whole panel is broke into quarters so if you mess with the lines
it could shut down more than you want.....

I get allot of cracked monitors so I get to see how these cracks affect the picture...

interesting none the less

When i say most, i dont mean all since I have seen some LCDs where the image still goes around the crack
and depolarized cristals that seep around it (the black blobs)
