hello all, i dont know if this is the right place to post this? well i recently had a surgery and have been in a chair 4 some over a week so it has given me the chance to read allmost every item on site. you all are all the smartest people on the net, i had stumbled accrossed this site about 4 mounths ago and was pissed that brain had the nerve to charge for info that everyone was giving away. well i went to other sites to try to find out about this stuff and it didnt work. so i decided to pay the membership fee, only 10.00$ wat a hell of a deal!
now i see why brain charged 4 this site, i have learned more on this site in the last 4 or 5 days then i have in the last 4 months, thanks guys. well im going to be building the haas box with a 14 inch lcd but where mine will differ(ok dont laugh until u hear me)i will be building mine out of CARDBOARD!! yes u heard me ihave followed the haas plans even though i am using 14 inch lcd i will be coating my box with a marine grade two part epoxy wich will make it harder than a piece of wood two or three times size of my cardboard.i will still use wood inserts for the inside and with the epoxy i will still be able to screw thru it,i may have to grind screws that come thru the box but it should work out nicely thanks for listening

p.s can i add photos in that file attachment part or is that just 4 links

This will be a great PLOG. Keep us up to date on the process of building your enclosure.

...Uhh...just in case, keep a fire extinguisher near.

thanks for your interest,as fror the heat thing this epoxy can with stand large amounts of heat i will have to coat it with a special paint. i even have some clear coat im going to check specs for its heat range ive taken photos but they are to large in kb's i need to figure how to shrink them.right now it seems strong enoug;h to support the weight but i will still coat it with epoxy, wich i will be buying in a couple days.

i got my email from lum today that my stuff is in the mail i cant wait to see my stuff.

thanks runaway.

After you use the "Browse" button to find the picture and the "Add this Attachment" button to upload it, you'll see a listing of the pictures you've uploaded just below those buttons. You have to use the "Add into Post" button to place it in your post.

I'm eager to see your design. I'm interested in the cardboard/epoxy idea.

I did my intake R1 Turvo for my eclipse with fiberglass epoxy, and it was fine with the heat. This will work fine, it just takes time to sand and make clean looking. I hate the sanding filling sanding filling stuff. I don't know if I would clear coat it, the internals should be a flat black to stop bouncing light. good luck regards

well it wont let my photos be put in it says there still to big.i think it will let me put one onhere it isClick to view attachment
idont have to many photos of the building of enclosure, but i plan on making another one for friend
it is strong enough right now i believe. but the epoxy will allow me to screw thru it and help with heat.
its great to see the racingman on here.
the epoxy i'll be using is a 2 part 2 to 1 mixture from west standard 105 resin and 205 hardener.the supplier is right here in my town.
oh and brain my parts are great they look even better in real life.

You wanna know what is funny about your build. You are making it paper light. But then unfortunately, you have to put in a big heavy ballast, light, lcd, lens etc. biggrin.gif
RUNAWAY
i had thought about that . this will be hanging in my den right above our heads so my lady was worried about the weight it is so light right now itt will probably weight half the weight of others.
Ecopure
I think this is a great idea!

As I was reading this I thought of the balsa wood airplane models I used to build as a kid. When the model's skeleton was done paper would be glued on the outside and painted with some kind of dope that would tighten it up.

It made the plane very rigid and light.

I can't wait to see the finished result

so far ive put one coat on not as strong on the sides as i hoped so ive decided that i can cut two sides and then epoxy those to the sides and then i should have the rigidity that i desire? i paid 58.00$ for the epoxy,40 for a viewsonic 14 inch lcd and the standard s15 package still havent thought about lighting.
RUNAWAY
welll i finished putting on the additional side plates it realy tightened up after that it was able to support a 25 pound steel weight from a weider set. i have added two coats so far and i think i will be able to screw thru it with no prob.

this is the lcd im usingClick to view attachment
it was easy to strip came apart smoothly till right at the end wheni as taking out the ffc on the side of lcd it was glued down and couldnt pry it up so i took a tiny flat blade to pry glue up and hand slipped and caught the corner on ribbon tore three lines in cable.
i belive that i can solder a wire on to the three pins and attach them to the metal connectors on the zif because i need a ext for a 20 pin ffc

heres the ffcClick to view attachment

sorry for crappy photo still havent mastered the art of close up photos. please as u read this feel free to give your advise. all my other photos are to big of the box but ihave a photo of the triplet hole with epoxyed mesh covering it for strength, this box is light and strongit weighs just over two pounds on my bathroom scale i know its not accurate but close enough.

i still havent let the ffc tear get me down i know i will figure out a fix or one of you will. im going ahead with the build heres photos.Click to view attachment

Could you have used fiberglass sheets with the epoxy? I use that for large model airplanes and that stuff is super strong and light! You can get different weight fiberglass sheets in large sizes. you just have to know how to work with the stuff so you dont end up sanding all week.
I cant wait to see the finished product. I think this goes up there with some of the best ideas. cool.gif
RUNAWAY
after i tore the ffc i figured that my lcd was ruined i was so mad i figured i would try to remove the anti glare
since it was there and if it did work i thought that it would help with my low contrast lcd 250-1. i dont have photos of the strip i used the rag soak method i had let it soak for about six hours and i didnt notice any change
soi took a magmifying tool and a very sharp box knife by looking thru the mag lens i could pick at the corner i was able to see the polorizer clearly so icould pick right at the top of polorizer flicked hte corner and up it came
wow thats amazingheres a photo of the tool .Click to view attachment
RUNAWAY
i did use sheets of batting cheap stuff i had layig around only for the ends though, i had thought about putting it all over it but that would have added weight and the idea was to make the lightest projector.
as for sanding that wont be a prob i have an air compressor and a da sander from my friend i use this epoxy all the time for props and auto repair .

people underestimate card board! imade this in about a half hour i bought a new tv a couple months ago i got it home and i could not put my cable box and dvd player on it because it had a sloped back so i threw this together. it runs the length of the 51 inch tv iwill paint it black wnen i buy my black paintClick to view attachment

It looks like a PS/2 connector used for a mouse or keyboard.

you have my interest, cardboard huh. I like the shelf you made for the TV. I cant wait to see how this turns out, keep us informed!

does any one know the weight of the haas enclosure just the box? just so i know where im at.
nickestorga
Epoxy is extremely strong, that should be a very rigid structure. I once made a skimboard using marine grade plywood and epoxy. You just gave me an idea for my next enclosure. Great job so far, good luck with that ffc.

THANK YOU ALL. when i started this project i new i had to come big or stay home when competing against some of the best and brightest in this field. and if i build a great projector it will be due to all of you.

i started the top last night it will be different i think you'll agree!

i have a question,i was under the impression that those zif connectors had two slots with metal pins connecting them. i had seen on some site that a guy soldered two of them together, iwas hoping to find one of those connectors because i need those metal pins to complete my circuts. i just bought my extension from the almighy brain. has anyone seen this type of connector? if so point me in the right direction.(please)

MDF is 16 lbs.

are you coating the inside with epoxy as well?
...
if not wouldn't the heat from the lamp cause the cardboard to catch on fire
if you are... would the heat from the lamp melt the epoxy?
RUNAWAY
i dont realy think so it would have to be afire to do real damage and if that happens its to late any way. yes im coating the in side and outside twice some areas three or four times. the people i bought the epoxy said that it should be al right that if i dont seal it with primer and paint it that in the begining that it may release vapors from heat to epoxy but only for a limited time then the epoxy should be alright. but the average temp of the boxes is 85 thru 95 with good cooling that ive seen so far . as soon as i find the measure ments for the inside placement of lcd and frensels, i have a idea for chambers for remaving hot air and besides theres always flashing.
RUNAWAY
ok heres a for instance before i got my welder i had patch floor board right above my header flange i coated the floor with a piece of cardboard and epoxy the header was about 1 inch to 1 and a half an inch below the patch and never had a problem .
RUNAWAY
well ive been doing things like the top and trying to make frames for lcd and frens but having trouble. in the time ive had to make the frames i yhought that i would try lcd to see wat i get and to my amazement it works even with a couple of ribbons tore, just the front screen comes up i dont have a cable to pplug into my laptop.

Excuse me for my ignorance since I am totally new to this world. First of all, I think DIY rocks. Too many brains and ideas that you can get for cheap!
How about using high heat resistant black paint that are normally used for wood grills or stoves? We get them cheap from homedepot or lowes. The specs say that it can withstand heat upto 1200 degrees F.

I am building a similar box which is quarter inch thick and is made of cardboard. So far, I have got a lot done and hopefully I can put up some photos of them too.

I have a difference though. The lamp box is made of MDF to take care of high heat and that fits this box in the rear. The box looks great too. I tried to build one with MDF and god damn, it was heavy for my 17 inch lcd. And since I am not too good at carpentary, I decided to order one from TESCORP. Since TES is so busy that I decided to do something since I wanted to see some of my "DIY" skills.

What do you guys think?
RUNAWAY
i have thought about hi temp heat paint.clear coat for the heat and uv. i was thinking of flashing. i have two layers of cardboard i put metal halide 500 watt shop light i put it on the side and left it there for ten minutes it got realy hot but you couldnt feel it thru the second sheet of cardboard, but that was right on it maybe 2 and a half inches. i also thought that with three fans in it two in the back and one under lcd to suck air between lcd and frens. every one elses boxes stay between 85 and 95 degrees even a 100 would be alright for the box maybe not the lcd,but thats wat the 3rd fan is for.

i wish u nothing but the best of luck

oh i know every one cares about the noise but im going to mount two speakers on the wall one on each side of the projector so i think it will drown the fans out.

hey kiranak wat style of box u makin?
RUNAWAY
sorry k u said u were making a similar box. hey man i dont think u can paint the back half of the box black does this paint come in like a white? or can u mix it to give it a light greyish color?
RUNAWAY
i have just completed my frames i hope they will work i had to put the lcd on the far side of frame because of the cables then i made a second frame for the frens wich will be sandwiched between the two frames,i hope this will work here are some photosClick to view attachment
