Ok, does anyone know anything about the inputs on this? It's the LCD screen from an old Compaq laptop.

The stripped LCD screen

The input cable and a close up on the circut.

The input cable (end that goes into the panel)

The input cabel (end that goes into the motherboard)
I'm looking to just convert that one way or another into a VGA input, like the end of a normal monitor.
Any suggestions? I really don't want to have to buy an LCD monitor.

Well thats a LVDS cable...
I dont think theres any way to just hook up a vga cable to it. You can try 'Digitalview', they have a soulution generator to match a controller to your LCD.
Or some mini motherboards offer universal LVDS compatiblity, eitherway you will end up spending what it would cost for an LCD monitor though

Using a Laptop LCD Screen is just not there yet, because laptops have the built in video driver board.

Well, I suppose that I could use the motherboard of the laptop for inputs. Then I guess I could just get a USB TV tuner.

You need a driver board for the lcd panel, tunner does not have a driver board a tunner is just for input, you have to have something to drive the lcd, its like having a computer without the motherboard, it just aint going to happen.

What Joe meant to say

is that there is a laptop screen you can use, there are 3 or so, a user here got a company to make the board needed for them to work. He is selling them (just the board now) and has a website for it. I'll try and find it later.
That right Joe?

Edit here it is

Well look at the date of that, almost a year ago, and they did not go over very well, and was lcd specific, And also way to expensive, you might as well just but the lcd monitor for almost 1/2 the price of that, thats the problem the controllors cost 250.00 and up.

hi there!
the connector on the figure is a lvds probably a 3 channel differential one.
i can ensure that there is no way to input rgb signals on motherboard to make that lcd run simply because the signal on the motherboard are digital ones Red (0-7) Blue(0-7) Green (0-7) and some other control signals like clock, enable etc etc....
I'm starting to design vga to lvds interface with the intention to add DVI to Lvds latter,as prices of those controllers sold in internet are too high and i can't afford one.
if i will have success i'll let know !!!

Hi MaXer,
Can you post your progress as you develop the board ? I am really interested in it.
thx

Fantastic !
...can you though make a generic controller board that would work for all Laptop Screens ?

Design schematic and firmware completed! Waiting for parts to arrive!Going ahead to develop the PCB for it...it'll take some time as i'm in the middle of exams these 2 weeks and can't work too much on it right now.
As soon as i'll succeed i'll let you know!
P.s. instead the scart to rgb i'll build these days!

i would like to know whether anybody of you here has good electronic skills,i would need flatlink interfaces datasheets,i intend the first prototype to be just functional on 640x480 and 1024x768 resolutions and will try on a hyundai tft 14.1" and a mitsubishi tft 14.1".These models have a 3 differential channel bus (and of course clk differential one, DE,GND etc) but larger models need 4 channels for rgb signalling. As i don't have too much free time to spend on searching around the web is it possible for anybody who has good electronic skills collect different interface's datasheets (5",7",14",15",17",19"..)and post them??

Hi Maxer
Im not sure I can help..however you might get more of a response if you start a new thread in
DIY Electronics section.
http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?showforum=41Very much interested in your effort having a couple of LG panel laptops hanging around.
Keep up the efforts.
Cheers

seems like nobody interested...everyone likes to get the results but not to give a hand...

that's not good...

I can give it a try. I am no expert in electronics though.
do you have any particular panels in mind except those two ? any brand that you prefer ?

Hi!
any type could go !
i need to know as many as possible lcd panel connector information (15,17,19,21 i would begin with these)
,pin information on connector, any lcd panel datasheet contain this information but i can't look every datasheet in particular, so this work would be easier if datasheets would be collected by lcd size, type of connector and link specifications so i would know that a certain configuration of firmware would do well for a whole group of lcds not not test them one by one.

Hi Maxer,
here you can find all lcd data sheets from 1.5" to 42" LVDS,TTL etc...
I have downloaded few datasheet on my hdd if this link doesn't work for you.
Let me know if you need more data sheets.
and please let us know your progress.

yes freewilly something like this....it is helpful as i can rapidly select any kind of tft by its connector and protocol interface....more sites like this would be very very helpful....
status :lvds block soldered & completed, designing rgb digital out.

my first try didn't work,i think to have some trouble with the power supply block...these kind of ic's are very sensible to voltage variations...
instead the backlight works...

i paused temporarily the construction of the lcd adapter as i miss 1 IC that must arrive these days...and at the same time i'm building a horizontal folded pj 15""...i'll give pictures and measurements & details when finished (i think this week)
