I don't mean pick on your opinion but I just don't get how people can like the original better? The acting, special effects, cinematography, music, atmosphere, every single aspect about the new one is clearly far FAR superior. Why do people still hold on to original versions of movies for dear life afraid to like something more that's been vastly improved? huh.gif Something I just never understood....

THe 1933 film was way ahead of its time with regards to special effects and peer films of the time though. I think you have to take classical films in context and judge them against other works of the period.
There was also a 1976 version that was fairly entertaining with jeff bridges...

I'm a big fan of the 1933 version, and I was not sure if I was going to like the new one or not, but I was pleasantly surprised at how Jackson worked it.

When you re-make a classic, you're always treading dangerous ground (like how do you re-make Citizen Kane? And Psycho didn't work too well...). Heck, remember the big controversy over Turner colorizing the old B & W movies in the 90's?

But I had fun picking out the little nods to the original that Jackson put in the new one (the music, the dated dialogue, the Art Moderne opening credits...) And the effects were, of course, mind-blowing.

All in all, I think the key to Jackson's success on King Kong was not just to "re-make" it, but to "re-interpret" it. To me, that made it way more interesting. And I think it became more captivating to a jaded modern audience.

And some people might not know this, but there was a bug/spider sequence in the 1933 original which was scrapped after the first screening because it was too shocking. No prints of it survive. So if the new one creeped you out, now you know what audiences in 1933 felt like!!

Right, I totally understand that. But my point is that as it stands, it is far FAR more entertaining and engulfing to watch Peter Jackson's interation of King Kong over the original.

Hmmm, I dunno. I think it's a bit like comparing Louis Armstrong and some modern day artist (I can't think of a modern equivalent). There is a place for both pieces of work and it is up to the individual viewer to decide that. I guess what detracts me from jacksons work is that it's not the first time this idea has been done, and having seen the 33 and 76 versions I felt he didn't have much new to offer the story. I do agree with you that it is a great film smile.gif , but I'm just not sold.

I agree with everything but the music part.
Max Stiener is the man!

It sounds funny and dated now, but what Stiener did was revolutionary. You hear alot of imitation of Stiener by Danny Elfman, who is heavly influenced by all the early film composers. Like in Pee-wee's Big Adventure, when Francis is having his "Bath". Its a total King Kong/Godzilla throwback... which makes it freaking hilarious!

I think you need to calibrate your LCD, Arctan. It looks like you might have a little "red push" problem.

I probably need to watch it again. I guess I went in, thinking it was gonna be the same story, but it was quite different. It isn't about holding on, but I don't like how the new hollywood needs to change so much always. IE, Dukes of Hazzard was stupid, and I still watch reruns of the real one. Brady Bunch was stupid. Etc. Movies like Chainsaw massacre was really good on the redo. It depends on what i am expecting I guess. i like the new Star Wars stuff. Although, I expected some of the same fighters they had in the original. Guess i will rerent it and see what I think on the rewatch. Now that I know it isn't the same story, I will watch it with a different mindset. wink.gif

The story was the same, but it was done through Jacksons eyes and it really seemed ( to me ) to be a labor of love. I was appalled that he was even thinking of this until I realized that he wasnt doing it for the money, he was doing it to retell a classic movie that had affected him profoundly and he wanted to give it some homage. The original rocked. This one did too but in a more detailed kind of way. In the end it seemed to me that all he did was use better effects to allow you to get closer to the character of Kong. When my daughter saw the scene after he beat the tar out the dinosaurs, and he stood away from the girl, she didnt say "wow look at the big ape"...she said "he's mad at her..."
I think thats what he was shooting for.... smile.gif
