Just a quick question about the Orions--how do you find them for home theater use.

regards.

Brilliant.
Vocals and percussion are where there excel. The majority of movies are speech so there perfect. I also run a couple of 15” drivers for the last octave.

Verrry nice looking room, gotta make the PJ to blend in tongue.gif

I like the dark red with that lighting.

good build!

Wow very impressive. The screen looks very well lit corner to corner. One of the best I've seen. How bright does it seem in person? Do dark movies fare well or do you feel you would like a little more brightness? Thanks. Very very nice.

Dazzzla what amps are you using for those,i've read that the ucd,or those australian designed ones(cant recall what they are now)are the dogs thingy's,i'm in the uk so sourcing good amps can be expensive/so diy amps might be it. --& it looks like another project for the never ending project list.
your projector image is great btw,im looking at a haas or military build sometime this year.

I use all DIY amps. The top and mids are run from 50W chip amps, the low end by a 100W mosfet. and the sub by a 300W Bipolar amp.

sorry thats what i meant to ask about diy that is.

i was trying to find out if you were using any of those diy designs that have been on other forums for a couple of years, whilst mooching around last year i found that orion builders prefered the amps by about 3 top notch small designers who make great amps --these i had read perform better than the suggested AVI amps.

The one that intrested me the most was the australian design one where the guy was being ripped off by the chinese copying his circuits before he could get a worldwide patened in place,i lost all my links a few months ago during a browser upgrade(sigh)so i cant remember who it was, what i can remember is that john curl lurked in this guys forum too.
--but anyway this is the route i'm taking once £'s allow,orions,amps,projector.--im a cabinet maker by trade so the woodwork dont bother me.---just the electronics will put me in an anxious state.

nope not rod(although i think rods stuff is great & a big contribution to the diy'ers).

ill have a dig around the orion diy forums again & see if i can spot the other 2 or 3 designers who are also supposed to be good.--since rod elliot has come up--how do you find those amps.

cheers. & --is it true you australians have 3 domestic taps Hot/Cold/XXXX.

LOL yes and no.
We are in the midst of a rather nasty drought at the moment, constant for seven years so far and sporadic for the last 20 or so years. Bendigo’s water supply is due to run out in September so our water consumption is under intense scrutiny. Water restrictions have been in place for at least 5 years now steadily getting more severe. So to answer your question yes we sot of have three taps, the normal hot and cold plus our grey water (washing machine and sink water).
Some of the things that are being implemented at the moment are a super pipe to transfer water from a nearby slightly less drought effected area, due for completion in September. And a new water treatment plant and pipe line to recycle water for non drinking needs. Some of the new homes being built now have an extra dedicated water pipe installed for recycled water use. The pipe and the tap are colored blue to indicate it’s not fit for consumption. Recycled sewage water for drinking has been mentioned and could yet be a possibility.LOL it’s probably cleaner than the crap( laugh.gif ) that comes out of the tap normally

Enough ranting for now biggrin.gif

Use the heat from your projector in a DIY desalination plant? You guys are just a big island with all that water surrounding you. No . . . wait . . . just allow "climate change" to melt the polar ice caps and dilute the oceans to a drinkable level. tongue.gif Or will you be swimming by that point? huh.gif

daazler i was thinking of the greg ball design which seems to have died a death, ithink theres something to be said for not jumping on a newly toted design--gb's amp was alll the rage 2 yrs ago--but is now seen as inferior against others.
the other options are.
rotel rb 1070
chipamps
gainclones
hypex ucd400(being favourites)--i might go this way.

i found rod's site about 6 yrs ago when i was looking into ambience retrevial,& have had it as a main ref since--he seems like a good guy to provide so much info for free.

if you are using his diy amp designs --which are you using & what do they sound like.--cheers.

btw--time to start adding whiskey to the water over there by the sounds of it.

regards.

I use a circuit very similar to this by Silicon chip using the LM3876. The MOSFET amp I built about 20 year ago and it’s still going strong. I can’t find the circuit for it but it’s a series 5000 by David Tilbrook
