wow, i wish i had a few hundred bucks to burn when i was in middle school
anywho, it looks like your off to a good start. be sure to read the wiki (pro guide) 5 or 6 times until you understand EVERYTHING in there. once you actually start putting stuff together you'll quickly find out if your missing anything.
study the wiring diagram and make sure you have some one who knows electrical wiring to help you. 400watts is no joke and can kill you! better safe then dead
the best thing to do now is plan. draw up a scale model of your box. plan where things will be mounted (both in the PJ and in your room). think of how you can make things adjustable. read the plogs, some are very long but are pack with good information and designs.
don't rush, take your time and stop if you don't know something.

Of everything in the store I'd say the modest expenditure for the pro reflector is the most bang-for-your-buck so I'd say yes - get the pro reflector. $15 to almost double your brightness? Is there any question?
Your Dad rocks.

Go slow and do it right.

What a coincidence. I am a sophomore in high school now, but when I built my first projector I was in middle school. I am also named Nick

I would say that the PLOGs of various builders are some of the most valuble reading material on the forums. I read your post in the Intelligent Projector Design section, and my advice to you is: you can do it! Just take your time, do not be hasty. Measure twice, cut once.
Good Luck, and be sure to make a PLOG!

Nick,
I'm learning too, but recommend also that you start your PLOG. I'm building this pj with my son who is a sophomore in high school.
Start off by reading other PLOG's and pick one that is close to your build, 17" vs 15", portable vs fixed mount, std lens vs pro lens, etc. After you read the PLOG, jump in and ask the PLOG's owner questions.
Then start your PLOG, listing what you want to build and put in a parts list. Ask questions in your PLOG and folks will help out. We started only 2 weeks ago and not gained soooo much knowledge and confidence due to the support of the folks on this board. I can tell you this, the only reason we've continued to press on is due to the outstanding support from the folks on this board.
Another word of advice..... this was our first build, so one of our objectives is to keep it simple and I recommend it. I've been sidetracked on wonderful ideas, outstanding designs and builds and keep coming back to keep it simple, get it done, see results, have fun. Oh and plan, plan, plan......
FYI - we did our monitor strip this week, have ordered all our parts (except the hardware store stuff) and will begin the build this sunday.

Read the PLOGS and BE CAREFUL WITH THE ELECTRICAL!!!!!! Just because it isn't plugged in doesn't mean it still isn't a potential hazard (capacitors).
Make sure your folks know what this thing is all about, and if your Dad can't help you, get someone else to help you. (Hey, maybe you can submit this thing as a science fair project or something if you've got a Shop/Physics teacher who can get involved).
Man, I can't tell you how many times I zapped myself good building projects and stuff when I was in high school; if our insurance guy had known about half the crap I had humming and sparking away in my room, he would have cancelled our fire insurance indefinitely. Not very smart on my part, just lucky!

That's great if you've got a teacher that'll give you a hand. I think any of my Physics teachers would have told me to go jump in the lake.
