DAZZZLA
It has been mentioned that the Wiki hasn't been updated much lately. The problem is finding accurate info to put into it and actually getting time to write them up. So I've opened this thread for anyone to make suggestions for new topics or changes to old ones. You could even write your own and post them here and if the wiki editors feel they are good enough we will add them with reference to who wrote them of coarse.
Just remember that the information you write needs to be reasonably accurate. And don't be offended if something you write doesn't get into the wiki. It doesn't necessarily mean that your info is wrong just that it may still be too subjective, is already in the wiki in some form or that it may be better to leave that particular topic to be discussed in the forums.
I'm not sure how this thread will go. It may just turn into a big messy thread so I'll just wing it and see what happens.

Anything that you feel that is important just put it in this thread. If you don’t want it known public then just PM me.

Just a comment: the new lens shift section is excellent.

Edit: Here's a suggestion:

in the wiki, I think it would be helpful to have links to your excellent focal length program and the rest of the build/calibration tools on the appropriate wiki pages. That way the info is more consolidated, and people don't have to flip from the wiki to the forums to find something.

i don't mean to bitch but the wiki sucks... i spent 10 minutes reading the section on Tempered Glass becuz i wanted to know how thick of a peice i need and all i got was a defination copied from another web site.. complete trash! its great they had a link in case i cared what the drawn out defination of tempered glass is i could have clicked on it. but the information posted there was useless.

don't get me totally wrong, some pages in the wiki are good but it always seems the info i'm looking for is not there and i turn to the forums, brew some coffee, and read for a day or two until i find what i need.

here's a better starting point, make a "best of" thread that points to good topics and posts then as people add links to these posts add that info to the wiki.

btw i'd add info to the wiki but i'm not allowed, if it was more open to members it would be more useful! Can't you just add some approval functions in there? anybdoy can make changes, but require them to be approved first

just some suggestions

just some suggestions
In their defense, the moderators (and wiki editors) have limited time like everyone else. I submitted some suggestions and they were basically immediately incorporated into the wiki. If you have suggestions or are willing to take the time to type something up I'd bet they'll use your stuff. As much as I hate to say it I think it's probably for the best that there are limited wiki editors. It does need work but it is a work in progress. There's no "best" solution I guess.

Edit: I forgot to mention that it appears as though the changes/additions that are being made are very good changes/additions.

Your 10 minutes would have been better spent with the Search feature. Since there are over 123K+ messages in the forums a "simple mode" search won't help. From the Search page, hit the "More Options" button and once there, for keywords, try "+tempered +glass +thick*". Then under "Result Type" choose "Show results as posts" (otherwise a hit might be in the middle of a 27 page thread). You'll still have 5 pages of results to wade through, but it will be more of what you're looking for.

Once you get through a few of those pages you may want to go back and add "+Lexan" to the keywords then search again. (And once you get through that, write up a paragraph of what you found out and send it to DAZZZLA so he can shove in the Wiki. That's almost as good as being able to edit the Wiki yourself, eh?)

Yup. And in excess causes "LL Fouro-Retinopathy". In mild cases this results in minor eyesight degradation, making a projector necessary (good for LL). In extreme cases this results in total blindness, making a projector useless (not bad for LL, they're already got your money).

This thread might interest you: State of the DIY Projector

Maybe the very first entry of the Wiki should be "How to find things in the LL forums".

for a newbie you had some good points! tongue.gif I agree my time would have been better spent on the forums, but isn't the point of this thread how to fix the wiki so more time is spent there?

thanks for tips on the search I know the "+" trick but like you said you still have to look in 5+ pages of results to find anything useful.

I've read the "state of the DIY projector" very good topic kinda of what i was talking about wink.gif .

i think one problem with the forum is its being used as knowlegde base system when its not designed for it. the wiki is more organized. more detailed categories and sub categories would help the forums searchable, they kinda started this with pinned topics but thats not the same. and good luck sorting everything into new categories! you're better off starting over.

Making the wiki open for all to edit runs the risk of miss information or hearsay so this thread is the next best thing. Just remember that the wiki here at LL is not meant to operate like a wiki in general. It’s the reincarnation of the original guide just in wiki format. This thread allows members to quasi edit the wiki. So if you find something missing you can suggest it here or edit that section and post it here or send it to me and if it looks good it will be add it to the wiki.
To keep this thread under control I’ll be deleting posts after a couple of days and add its content to the suggestion post.

My pleasure. I hope it helps some folks out. I have some other ideas I'll try to get around to sometime.

Notice any problem there? Since I'm in the U.S., I won't be able to read about Lens Shifting or Pro Reflectors until May 3rd, or How To Search until September 3rd. I can't wait that long! And Dazzzla you (in Australia) won't be able to read about Split Optics until April 3rd.

Why, it's almost like we were in completely different time zones ;-)

Suggestion: Unambiguous (locale independant) dates:

Updated: split and unsplit optics Mar 4 2006
Added: Lens shifting Mar 5 2006
updated: Added the pro-reflector to the reflector section. Mar 5 2006
Added: How to search the forums Mar 9 2006 By Durachko

(This may seem trivial, but it may make phrases like "currently in the LL store" less ambiguous).

Thanks,
Mike
