Firstly, apologies for this question as a new topic. I was reading last night around 3am and thought I bookmarked/subscribe to the original post I saw this. I wanted to read it again. After an hour of searching different forums, I give up.

What I do recall is reading someone who replaced their 15" with a 17" LCD and used Powerstrip to reduce the screen size due to their use of standard triplet and fresnel. I don't recall why. It was late for reading and comprehending, but intriguing.

I planned (and still may build) a build using the 15.4" Proview Widescreen. However, it seems that luck and opportunity have met and I have become suddenly blessed with several items for my build at no cost!

1 - 19" NEC Accusync LCDV9 (no backlight, but panel works, FFC?)
1 - 18" Viewsonic VP181B (no backlight, but panel works, FFC?)
5 - Beseler Opaque Projectors (for the big triplet)

Anyway, after reading about the effectiveness of opaque triplet lens, I figure it has to be a viable alternative albeit concerns with focusing and dim corners. Thesee concerns that are not insurmountable from previous attempts that I have read. And since I now have these assets, I now have a relative low risk starting position to experiment.

Here is the deal. Last night I read that a fellow LLer, used Powerstrip to reduce his screen size to avoid dark/unfocused corners. Much like simply playing 16:9 movies on a 4:3 PJ to avoid corner issues. Since 19 inches is a lot of screen space to play around with, logically, I can still get xga or even wxga 1280/768 --similar to the 15.4" (16:10) Proview or and not miss anything (right?). The size of the actual panels are within 15x12.

My questions:

1) How do I do this? Set monitor to its native resolution? Then, alter with Powerstrip?

2) What are the side effects of doing this per the following uses?

a) standard DVD playback from PC

cool.gif playback with HD DVD or HDTV (I don't know why a smilie showed up here)

c) playing games, ie PS2 or Xbox

d) 4:3 format or widescreen general viewing

e) or perhaps -- don't worry David as long as you stay in 1280x720 mode you will be just fine

e.2) what if I did 1024x768

f) triplet matters should I use 550 or something bigger

f) is there anyone else doing this

Will sharpness and detail or other factors be retained or lost? I am not too concerned with losing screen area as long as I can maintain a sharp, bright, focused image using software to make it fit in the triplet.

Of course I will try it without, but I wanted to be knowledgeable of different options as I collect my pieces.

BTW, stay tuned for the extra opaque lens, I may ebay them since I will not use them all.

Regards,

David
