SIMS2....they target on a heat signature as small as a ladle!! tongue.gif

This just makes me wish i can use fibre glass for my second build something more Husband friendly than wife friendly biggrin.gif. I have a few friends who gave me a quote for 40 to make and paint whatever i came up with. They usualy do car kits and so on but you can get them to do all kinds of things for free if they are bored.

You better be very careful then...

Chuck, have you made any conclusions about Split Vs. Unsplit fresnals? It looks like you've tried both ways now; both yielded great results it seems. Also, do you think we need to worry about fresnal-bowing when building vertical? Thanks
DarkMeat
Hi Chuck I was wondering how large is your fs mirror an how far is the fresnel focal point away from the triplet. Basicaly is your fs mirror resting close to the lcd or is it much higher?
The pic is with a 15" width using a 13" long fs mirror at a 45 degree angle the triplet is a 18" opaque lense. The rear fresnel is the 220mm and a 550mm front fres.
Is your build similar or are you outside dimensions much larger which would place the triplet closer to the inside of the pj?
The total height is around 30" in this design but I might go with a seperate compartment for the ballast to give the bulb more room.

DM

Mine is just like that design inside, Very close anyhow. Mine is taller but it has a lot of dead space in the bottom. Eventually a pc will go there. My mirror is oversized for this build,10x12 inch

AZ

I am unable to get a clean shot fo the triplet with my current mirror mount. I am going to try a different mount for it but first I am having some eye surgery. I have a catarac and am having surgery tomorrow but will try to get it done as soon as I am up to it.

The bowing would come from heat so if your cooling circut is designed well it should not be a problem. I like unsplit better, it is brighter and more focused but if you need a keystone adjustment you will need to run them split.
arizonavideo
Hope the eye treatment goes well. I can do the same test here to see the triplet shot I will have know the placements of the lamp and condenser. You are using a 550mm/330mm? right. I was just trying to get an idea if changing any thing will make much of a differance.

Thanks for the well wishes, Should be back online on Fro to ck in

550,317 Condenser 8mm from lamp amd 238 mm from condenser to rear of the collector.

Sorry Chuck didn't know you weren't feeling your best these days I hope everything goes well more than likely you'll have the doc take pics of the procedure smile.gif
ChuckL
Back guys, the surgery went well! biggrin.gif

Still not up to full speed but I can see a lot better! Was looking at my build today and I have a few adjustments to do. It is nice to type and not make mistakes!

AZ

Did you have time to do any tests? From looking at my build this morning it looks like most of the light yolk in in the triplet. I will try to work on the mirror mount in the middle of the week. I have found the cause of my corner delema I think. LCD alignment and mirror placement.

I could do some test I have a new lamp the HQI 400 watt but what I was thinking was a answer to the question of what position is brighter vertical or horizontal I'm thinking both positions will make almost the same lux if the lamp is fed the same power.

I don't have a lamp with a 27mm arc only smaller and larger. I already know that condenser lens fl is too short for a 14mm arc (the size of the arc and halo of the HMI 1200 watt lamp) and a 19” LCD.

I think I will use the ED28 lamp It has a 38mm arc but I can move it around easy so I can do both thest at the same time. The size of the arc image and the light pattern will be diferent though.

Past testing has shown that over filling the triplet is where the brightest readings come from.

Still have a few days until I can lift anything but will work on the PJ real soon. Still want to do that condenser experiment. Let me heal a few more days and I will get on it!

Since I can't do any lifting I have been working on some graphics. Here is a small preview!

Hey Chuck are you wanting to go with a more abstract design or something that looks commercial. With your pj being so tall you may want to think of a front design thats more vertical so that it doesn't look empty in some areas. To me your pj is a large piece of canvas only a small section of it may need a design to make it all look good.
arizonavideo
Chuck Im not pushing you, Take your time and have fun. smile.gif
pun15her
I reckon she looks pretty good. smile.gif We need a pic of her in all her beauty,a "preview" is diminishing the whole effect of seeing it in the context of a completed design.
Nice from what I can tell though. smile.gif
ChuckL
Yea but ya know I just couldn't wait to show ya! smile.gif Still working on the rest of the graphics, those are the few chosen ones that I am happy with but still tossing around a few more!
arrik
Those graphics are cool!!! I love that "Intel Inside." Could give a nice commercial pj aesthetic. Inspired by LL logo kicks butt too! I wanted to put a logo on mine, but couldn't think of an adequate way to do so. Yours look good though. Can't wait to see what you decide to go with.

Thanks arrik!

Just wanted to make it not so plain and jazz it up a little. Although the P4 isn't actually inside yet it will be shortly, just gathering the final few parts that I need to make it happen.

I did a quick test with a 6" 170mm fl condenser and a 330mm/600mm fresnel combo and a 38mm arc lamp.

After a few adjustments the light going into the triplet looked like this.

I am a little disappointed at the lux readings. Raw ANSI lux was 3186. If your LCD was 5% then you would only get around 150 ANSI. I was using an ikea reflector and it's doesn't seam to work at all and I didn't to any tweaking.

raw ansi lux after the triplet? which triplet if so.... and the number doesn't surprise me, I'm using a 4.5" x 6.5" FL precondenser, 330/600 and when I get the beseler thats about what I have "guestimated" I will get.... think a different focal length condenser might help?
ChuckL
Interesting numbers...Thanks for doing that test AZ. I am going to have to put my condenser tests on hold for a wile.

My father has passed away and I am leaving for Florida in a little wile. I will continue my testing after I return home.He was 84 years old.

Sorry to hear that. Always bad news. Have a safe trip.

I'm sorry to hear about your father, Chuck.
84 is a pretty good age to reach, but it's never long enough.
I hope that his presence in your family's memories, hearts, and minds can help you all carry him with you and help to fill the hole left by his physical absence.
DarkMeat
Sorry about your father Chuck hope to see you back soon.

Hello Lumenlab!
Hello all, I have finally returned to chat and play. It was a long and diffcult trip and it is good to be home.
Will be starting on a duel condenser setup very soon. It was good to watch the projector once again!
SIMUL8R
Welcome back Chuckl. Looking forward to read more from you.

Dual condensers? Funny, I'm doing the same thing. Definately, looking forward to what you find.
arizonavideo
Nice to see you back Chuck. Just what kind if dual condenser setup are you thinking of?
Fulcrum
Good to see you back Chuck.

I've been waiting to see someone try a dual dual condenser setup.

Cheers!

Hi Sim, AZ,Fulcrum
Have a 6 inch lens that AZ gave me a wile ago. I am going to try to see if i can boost the lumens a little. Have the 4.5 that is in the box and a Jeagers 5 inch to experiment with. I believe it is from an Altman spot light.I"m ready to get my feet wet again.

Heya Chuck. I just finished reading your PLOG. Great work!. When I started thinking out what will someday be my PJ, I was thinking a Haas box. The more thinking I do, however, the more I lean towards a 17" Pro Vert. In reading your PLOG, I definately got some great ideas, that I'm sure wil help when I get to build time. As the others have mentioned, I'm sorry to hear your father passed, and thrilled to hear the surgery went well for you. I look forward to continuing to follow your PLOG, and I'm sure I'll borrow quite a bit of inspiration.

Later!

hey chuck um this dude said somthing about this , it concerns mdf light houses.burning holes and some (#$%^...mod edit) .

''definitely get some flashing or something in there. My lightbox was made of MDF and the spot above the bulb (duh heat rises, silly me) got really burnt. I'm lucky it was a slow char and didn't start a fire. Literrally burnt a hole all the way through the wood. Just took 6 months.''

hehe....let's keep the vulgar lingo out guys. We mods are having a tough time trying to keep the pornographic and viagra spammers out as it is...hehe

ChuckL, I pointed Jacky and others to your thread since you pretty much built your lightbox all of MDF especially your lid that holds your precon and most especially since your pj is in the vertical fashion (heat rising). Obviously there is a claim of a possible 'flame out' although I'm not sure if an active cooling system was implemented by the member. Are you experiencing anything of the sort?
ChuckL
Haven't had any trouble with mine, but will do an inspection to make sure that all is ok. Time to clean the frensels anyway. Have about 300 hrs on mine so far. Will post results from the inspection on Sunday.MDF smells really bad when it burns so I would guess you would be able to smell even a slow burn. Active cooling is a must in any setup. Will look at that plog and respond.
ChuckL
Inspection complete. No defects noted.
I have a thought on why that is happening with other MDF light engines. On my design I recessed the condenser into the top of the light box. I also left a 1/2 inch gap around the condenser. It creates a 1/2 inch gap around between the bulb and the MDF. With strong cooling and the condenser lens over the arc the light is refracted and the heat does not build on the MDF. It has however dried a bit. Also my MDF has 4 coats of 1200 degree Krylon bbq paint which I think helps also. See page 4 of this plog to see the condenser mount

Hi Lucky

It is a great lens and very bright. I can understand why you feel that way now. I am in Florida with my mom and it could be a wile before I get back but I had thought that if i send it to Surplus Shed that they could copy the lens and then we would know for sure the correct combo to make these lenses and perhaps be able to make a few. It is much better than the pro lens for light captured but it doesn't have the throw. Far superior to the standard lens. Does this sound possible? Do you know if surplus shed still does that?
