Full Version: 15.4" double-fold idea
Lumenlab > LLAVS: Lumenlab AVS > Advanced Projector Builder > "Folded" designs

ok, here's my setup:
-15.4" eMachines LCD(mounted on a 14"x14" lcd tray)
-2- 330mm fresnals(both sandwiched together in front of lcd)
-400w MH(lumen eBallast and Ushio bulb)

right now i have a basic straight through design with my ohp's triplet with the mirror still attatched on top that way it stands vertical and i can adjust the images placement, well i'd like to make a new smaller enclosure and i was thinking of something like this:

has anyone done a design like this so far with a 15" screen?
and can anyone give me some ideas for my lengths i need?
and the first mirror reflecting the light from the bulb to the lcd should be able to be a standard mirror, right?
thanks for any feedback

Well, that was a smart way to fold it. I dont know if it works, but it looks like it can work.

the distance of a1+a2 in my projector is 18cm. which means your a1 and a2 will be less than 10cm each. I don't think the bulb will fit in that setup, unless it flush up against something like the galss/fresnels, in which case won't work. Make a diagram with all component to scale and you'll see what I mean. Will be difficult to fit all the parts in
eight_heads
well A1 and A2 together need to make 330mm(aka ~13"), but yeah, i need my new bulb to come in and i'm probuably going to make a cardboard mockup

It might be a bit awkward, but if you folded it so the bulb was above the len you would have an easy time cooling the LCD. Of course this would put the lens on the bottom, but it shouldn't be a problem I'd think.

No, a1 and a2 need to be 220mm, it's b1 and b2 that need to make 330mm. And you will find that for maximum brightness you will need to adjust the distance so that is is most likely less than 220mm, in my case it was 180mm
eight_heads
no, A1 + A2 needs to be 330mm because both of my fresnals are 330mm, unlike the kit sold here where the first one is 220mm and second is 330mm, so both of my distances needs to be 330mm

and quietas,
the enclosure will be set horizontal, this is a top view of my idea, so the heat is going to rise up away anyway, but thanks

well i just got my LL ballast in today and my ushio bulb will be here tomorrow, so i'm kind of going off of those measurements

b.t.w. i have a 400W magnetic Metal Halide core/coil ballast and one of the eye shaped MH bulbs for sale, pm me if anyone is interested
eight_heads
well, the bulb got lost by ups, ended up in california....so it should be here on the 15th hopefully, i got a new set of fresnals and worked out a focusing mechanism.... so when i get my bulb in i can start laying out a design
eight_heads
well i decided to do a haas style box insted, actually, it's almost done.... you can check you the link in my sig.....i'm planning on adding some more pics this weekend and hopefully finish it

ya i want to see as well... im doing a 15.4 as well but a single fold not double... but if double ends up being feasible then hell ya smile.gif

That is a crazy idea. You're blowing my mind, hope it works out for you.

Funny, I just spent a few days hashing out double-fold ideas and basically ended up with something almost exactly like the design in the first post, only smaller (for a 9" lcd) and I'm going to try fitting it inside a tower computer case. Been done before I believe, but not by me biggrin.gif

One remaining question is... is there any benefit to using a first-surface mirror for the first fold as well, or will any second-surface mirror do?

EDIT: I see the OP asked this as well. Any thoughts?

Has anyone attempted or made progress on this? I am thinking about using it for my build.

I just "invented" this idea myself today. Heh. Having my pj double folded would allow me to put it in front of my couch and still have it on the center of the wall.

Maybe someone has attempted something like this?

Don't think you really had this all to scale yet.

First of all. Your LCD screen should be about 13in Wide.

Next is even if you had your mirror (at 45degree) touching your lcd the center of the mirror will approximately be about 6in away.

So this will only give you 7in between the Lenze/Lamp and the mirror, but your LCD is only 6.5in long between the center of the mirror. Giving you only 0.5in between the lamp and the LCD.

So A2 and B2 would only be 6in
and A1 and B1 would only be 7in.

This design would work well on smaller LCDs but not on 15.4in.
