QUOTE (jmrguy @ Jul 30 2005, 12:14 PM) Sweet, that means it actually has no FFC, it is a wired cabled. And, it only has 2 edge connectors? That should make this panel very easy to work with, and much less fragile. Thanks jrmguy, looking forward to more pics when you get your camera. -------------------- |

Actually, it has 6 edge connectors on the one side (the pic didn't show it very well). But nevertheless, I think that will make the edge connectors more stable to have 6 (but more things that could break). This monitor is very easy to strip, and not overly fragile. Definately recommended. I haven't actually fired it up yet after the strip (I will once the box is done) but it seems fine to me.

Thanks! Jmrguy
look forward to further pics. Sounds like this monitor is great choice for a 17" PJ. I feel confident in stripping it now. |

Tigerdirect extended the rebate until the end of August for anyone still interested in this monitor (still $209).

Are the 6 edge conncetors on the bottom, top or on the sides. If they are on the sides then that may interfere with some sled designs.

Hmmm. I'm pretty sure they were on the top of the monitor (this is the ideal place because when you flip and invert the lcd, it puts the circuitry on the bottom of the box. correct?). I know it was definately not on the side.

I think you mean ground them. I would just screw one end of the ground wire into the side of the box and you should be ok. Good to see someone else was able to strip it with success. It is quite easy if you go slow.

Has anyone been successful in forcing a 1280x720 resolution on the Hyundai l72s screen? I keep getting the message monitor does not support this mode.

QUOTE Has anyone been successful in forcing a 1280x720 resolution on the Hyundai l72s screen? I keep getting the message monitor does not support this mode. Thats a bit of a worry venery99, I was thinking of gettng one of these to replace my trusty BenQ 567s v2. Assuming you are using Powerstrip, the driver has accepted the new resolution of 1280x720 and then asks you to reboot. After rebooting, the slider in Powerstrip is used to select the new resolution and will report whether the display has accepted the new resolution, is it not doing this? Does the Hyundai simply display "monitor does not support this mode". I had difficulties with this with the BenQ trying to get 1024x576 but discovered I was trying this resolution at 75hz vertical (I'm in PAL land). If I used a more standard 60hz then later tweaked the custom timings to 75hz everything was OK. |

I have to try a few more things. Basically I have tried the preset values that are already in my display properties, ie 1280x720. But I get Monitor does not support mode. This is at 60hz. I will have to try some more custom resolutions with powerstrip.

Nope, Unfortuantely the L72s doesn't support 720p:
http://www.hyundaiq.com/pro_spec_l72s.asp Under factory presets 1280x720 isn't listed. I tried hooking up my x2vga, 480i works fine but no 720p. You'll need a scaler. BTW, I finally built my projector using this baby, yes the picture is sweet :-) No 720p is dissapointing. I made the box similar to matropolis but even uglier ;-). Picture quality is excellent, very surprised how easy it was tune in. I'll post some pics in my plog soon. Now I think I'm going to have to build one like puni15er's just so the wife will let me keep it in the house. Back to the MDF board ;-( |

Thats right, 1280x720 (a 16:9 format) is not listed as a preset but neither has my BenQ got 1024x576 (also a 16:9 format) listed either but I can still set my BenQ to this resolution.
If its a 4:3 display, ie. not a widescreen display, then it will only have 4:3 presets available. These are just a handfull of commonly used resolutions an average user might use. The Hyundai L72S is typical of this. However...most LCD monitors have about 50 user-defineable resolutions available but you have to use a program like Powerstrip to set them. Try Powerstrip, you will see what I mean. This post has been edited by meyer2: Aug 23 2005, 03:10 PM |

That's good info, Meyer2, but if it sounds like powerstrip only lets you find similar 16:9 resolutions for your video card/LCD to display. I have a device (x2vga) that converts HDTV to vga (no scaling) like the vdigi so it will only display 640x480, 1280x720, etc. Can Powerstrip program the monitor to accept 1280x720 so those converters will work?

Recently we were having a discussion about the CMV-520D and getting Powerstrip to use a 1024x576 resolution (1024x768 is the standard resolution). SIMJEDI posted a link in this thread which expains how to run a "resolution within a resoltuion", rather than just selecting the predefined timings. Perhaps you could try these same basic steps within Powerstrip, but of course adjust the resolutions to fit your 17" setup. Of course using Powerstip is kinda moot if your hooking your xbox to your LCD as the PC doesn't even come into play... looks like no 720p games from the xbox. most of them are 480p anyway...

Do people who own the Hyundai L72S notice any(much) Backlight Bleeding?
Backlight Bleeding is a common problem with LCD monitors and it depends on quality control during manufacture of the panel. It varies considerably from one panel to the next and also between manufacturers. What may appear as minimal Backlight Bleeding on a monitor in normal monitor use may look totally unacceptable when we blast 400 watts of light through the panel and project on a screen in a darkened room. Here are some pictures of two different Samsung 930Bs' showing Backlight Bleeding. I would like to point out the Samsung 930B is the big cousin of the Samsung 730B which uses the same panel used in the Hyundai L72S. Edit: Ignore the bright spot in the middle of the first picture. When I had mine put together and was using it as a monitor, I saw absolutely no backlight bleeding. I now have a Fuji 19" (600:1 contrast) because I wanted to go with a bigger one for every day use, I can definately tell there is some backlight bleeding (and it is kind of annoying) but even the Fuji is nothing like those pictures.

Thats good to hear jmrguy, about the L72S I mean.
My BenQ 567Sv2 has backlight bleeding on all 4 sides and streaks of light go right through the monitor from top to bottom, I don't want a repeat of this with my next monitor. Here is another picture I found on a forum illustrating Backlight Bleeding. This is a Philips 190B. Notice it appears only at the top and bottom of the screen but its much worse at the bottom. Has anyone tried the resolution within a resolution yet? I would try mine, but it's not easily accessible at the moment. I was thinking of getting a transcoder, but it sounds like it may not work.

Jmrguy, Not sure what you mean by resolution in a resolution but here's my experience with it so far:
XBOX 480P, using x2vga - supported but colors are a little washed. Definitely playable though. XBOX 720P, 1080i not supported. So a transcoder going from HDTV to VGA will only display 480i/p, and not that great either. Now if your using an HTPC watching 720P @ 1280x1024 is spectacular! I downloaded a 720P WMV on the Space Shuttle launch. Absolutlely amazing. like watching a 5ft Plasma! So if you want to get full HD quality from your xbox, xbox 360, or satelitte HD you'll need a video scaler. I've just come to that conclusion. I've looked around on the web a bit and the focus enhancements CS-HD looks good, marked down significantly to $200. Still a pricy and unexpected option, but I want to watch HD from the satelitte, xbox and xbox 360 when it comes out. Dang. |

The resolution in a resolution was from an earlier post about PowerStrip.
Hmmm, that sucks that we can't use a transcoder. Do you know anything about the quality of this CS-HD scalar that you are talking about (also, where is it $200)? I haven't been able to find much about it on the web. Does it look better than the N6 (I am definately not impressed with the N6's quality)? Thanks. -------------------- |
