Dont know if it would be suitable for a projector but interesting nevertheless

Silicon Valley's Luxim has developed a lightbulb the size of a Tic Tac that gives off as much light as a streetlight. CNET News.com's Michael Kanellos talks to the company about its technology and its plans to expand into various markets.

If its going to be used in street lights i cant see the price going to be too high. I dont think these bulbs produce that much heat either

Looks like there is more information in the press release on Luxim's website.

PDF warning: http://www.lifi.com/...ENT-17Mar08.pdf

"The new module outputs up to 12,000 lumens from a small emitter in a forward intensity pattern with a color
rendering index (CRI) of 91 and a 20,000 hour lifetime."

I'm sold, 20,000 hour life, 91 CRI, 140 lumen per watt, perhaps what a 3mm arc? It looks like the controller or ballast may be expensive but it is the perfect PJ lamp.

I would expect all the PJ makers to start using the lamp as soon as they can find a way to shorten the lamp life to 3000 hours!

Amazing.

Holy Frijole!! I wonder what the catch is? Imagine dropping one of those suckers into a highly reflective parabolic using thin wires to hold it in place and no "void" hole in back. Awesome.

I don’t think a reflector is going to be an easy option for this lamp. There needs to be a wave guide, a puck?, at the rear to direct the energy to the vessel. From what I can see in the PDF they have used conventional optics in front to direct the light.

It looks like you have to use Internet Explorer to view the video. It wouldn't work in Firefox, for me.

I'm really liking this bulb! For only a 250w'r it kick the snot out of that 400w MH. No mention on heat generated, though. Bet if they came up with a 350w version it would destroy a 575.

0.55 min into video it mentions that a large proportion of energy gets turned into light instead of heat.

They have them in a Panasonic TV. Here is the Cnet review: http://reviews.cnet....l?tag=pdtl-list

If its in a TV, then it must be replaceable and purchasable from somewhere. Maybe a Panasonic service center will sell it.

ouch.

but what is the cost of a replacement bulb?

high initial investment, but might be worth it if the replacement is low as this uses a hella less electricity.

I know, this thread is kind of old, but all DIY forums in the worls are licking there fingers for the plasma bulb. Aint there a chance for a big group buy?
We could ask for a price for 30+ kits. Is there someone who allready has got a connection to Luxim?
