The top and bottom will be covered with countertop laminate. With felt strips along the edges to light seal the box. Together they should fill the slot in the side panels .
The panels and lens will mount in aluminum rails that sunk into the side panels. The entire assy ( forward of the light box) will be completly adjustable with plastic expanding slides that lock into the rails.

I intend to add venation slot in the bottom and it with vent around the norpro and over the top of the sheild then out the back.

I am working on designing a base that will enclose the ballast and PC.

Here is an idea for the base. I will most likely close in the box ( at least the top ) to keep the light leakage to a minimum.

Great conscept somehow I believe that you have the capacity to pull it off. I can't wait to see the completed projector. That swivel mount looks like a Dobsonian telescope mount. If you are not familiar with these it might be worth your while to check out some telescope websites for design inspiration. You obviously have access to a nice shop if you're going to build this; I'm jealous :)

Day one :

I guess I have an unfair advantage. I bought a surplus mill from work and am able to do some complex parts. The the hardest part was making a 30 inch part, when my machine only has 20 inches of travel.

I managed to complete both side panels and the front and rear pieces today ( long day).

I've got an older Princeton panel stripped and ready to go. Not the best specs, 200cr / >50ms. All the electronics come off the side. I hope I left enough room too!! Kinda hard to lay it out because it is so fragile. I want to see the results before I strip my LiquidVideo 15". In fact thats how I happened into this site, I was looking for a source for a replacement monitor before I built it into a lathe control I was working on. But seeing that this is one of the best monitors for this project I didn't want to waste it on that. I say WAS working on because this kind of distracted me for a while! Actually I was looking for an excuse.

How are you going to balance that? theres alot of weight in the back with the ballast, etc. Just wanted to throw that up incase you didn't think about it and it keeps falling over backwards on ya ;)

We're not worthy! This is one heck of a project. Are you using the new zoom lens or is that some sort of threaded PVC focusing mechanism? It looks huge.

Thanks for the comments...
The wood is like butcher block, but is pine. I think they call it project panel. Not too expensive. 16" x 96" was around $12. I still have about 18" left. In case I have to add a second tandem fan in the back. It was actually easier than trying to cut a big piece of MDF.

The lens housing is two pieces of PCV pipe fittings. The outer is a 4" coupler and the inner is a 3" - 4" adapter. I read a post from someone else lately that was using the same concept. They were both turned on a lathe to clean them up and make clearance for some velcro ( soft side ) with some interfearance for a tight slip fit between them.

This is a great design? The unique thing about it , it is orginal! Cutting down on the weight and box appearance makes it look so very interesting. Going the higher level of craftsmenship is very inspiring.

I hope to use some of your ideas in my projector. If it is OK.

Thanks for sharing.

Haas, have you calculated the FOV of the projection lens to prove that the focusing mechanism isn't too small?

Brain,
I didn't calculate it, but I modeled it all up. In that first diagram, the forward transparent cone is a cone 330mm long and 15" in dia, then clipped to show the panel size...I guess the answer is ' I hope so..!! '.

actually the lens sits pretty far back in the inner tube. It's less than an inch from the back of the inner tube to the glass surface.

In case anyone wondered 'why the rods?', it's so you can remove the front or back covers without the whole thing falling apart.

You mean you were able to come up with the whole enclosure from one piece of 16" x 96" wood ! I think I've been going about my plans in the wrong direction. :o
I know you mentioned having a mill, so no doubt that is how you were able to go about shaping it that way. Not possessing a mill, what else would you suggest using to obtain that shape ? I realise it could mean a lot of work, but undoubtedly worth it in the end.

UH, uh, just remembered my plans are for a 17" not a 15", so <maybe> a 16" x 96" won't suffice anyway.

Thanks for pointing the way. Oh yes, I've always thought Chevrolet were off the mark with their slogan for the Silverado........"Like a Rock !" forgetting that a rock doesn't move. Duh ! But your projector without its intended base will surely rock. ;)
