Tonight was also a fun night. My kids watched Little Nemo, one of their favorite films. However tonight I wanted to see how big of a picture I could achieve in my family room. I used the back wall as it is normally bare, and I didn't have to remove any pictures or other artifacts from it. My goal was to achieve a 15 foot (4.57 m) diagonal with the 16:9 format. However I could not get it that big as PJ was up against the other wall. However the picture was still big enough for me and my kids. smile.gif

However, the design intent was to have the PJ pointing 180 degrees the other way, with the triplet coming through the wall, that would push the PJ back another 2 ft, so perhaps a 15 ft diagonal is still possible, but just not right now. cool.gif

Here are a couple pictures of what I was able to achieve:

Star Wars (11.5 ft X 5 ft) 12.5 ft / 3.8 m Diagaonal:
Attached File  2007_04_05_Pic_5___Star_Wars_11_5_X_5.jpg ( 29.28K ) Number of downloads: 45

Little Nemo (11.5 ft X 7 ft) 13.5 ft / 4.1 m Diagonal:
Attached File  2007_04_05_Pic_7___Little_Nimo_11_5_X_7.jpg ( 46.21K ) Number of downloads: 39

My oldest daughter, 7 year old, even told me tonight, that she never imagined that the PJ would be so nice!

Cheers!

Fulcrum

P.S. Yes the picture shows the screen a little green, but in reality is not that way; The Walls are a light yellow; The camera has made the image 2 shades too bright.

Today I went back and checked out my 1st LCD to see if it was still operational or not. I found out that it is not! So instead of using the 1st for the PJ (as hoped), and building the 2nd back into a monitor to be used on by kid's computer, I decided to strip the anti-glare off the second LCD.

It did not go as well as the 1st LCD, but I did get it done! wink.gif

Wetting the LCD with wet towels:

Aaaagh, it Tore!
Attached File  2007_04_07_Anti_Glare_Removed___Pic_2___Tear.jpg ( 19.34K ) Number of downloads: 9

I had to rewet it a few times, but it all eventually came off!

Well, at least with the camera shots, they look identicle, however, I know better, the Projection is a little bit brighter than previous. Not a Whopping whole lot, but still a good shade brighter. smile.gif

I was looking back through your plog (went back to the original picture of your TV and triplet projection) and I noticed something from December........
QUOTE (Fulcrum @ Dec 22 2006, 09:39 PM) *
I also worked on extending my FFC. Looking at the picture below, can you tell me what is wrong?

[attachment=30081:attachment]

If you guessed that the metal of the ribbons should be facing away from each other (facing out) instead of facing toward each other you are correct.

I did not realize this until the plastic snap supplied with the FFC extention broke, that I was able to peer inside the snap and see how it all hooked togther.

[attachment=30082:attachment]

Did you leave the contacts facing away from each other in the connector for the extension? If so, it is surprising that the LCD showed anything at all, even lines. The contacts are supposed to be facing each other, touching, to work.

Tgreenwood,

In the end, I actuall did face them together, so that the metal faces touched. Shortly there after I saw some smoke for the circuit board, as they must have still been misaligned, and the power circuit must fed its energy into a line that should not have received such power. sad.gif So it is no wonder that after I added a dual ffc jumper, my 1st LCD still didn't work. tongue.gif LOL.

It's nice to see a picture up and running.

How's it look in real life. The pictures don't look so hot and they don't look that bright either. The 575 should be one of the brightest PJ out there.

Do you have light leaks? or is the camera just not showing how it looks?

What the whole rig look like?

A/V,

I definitely think the Anti-Glare did improve the light, but not to the same degree I had imagined. It seemed that in Simul8r's plog, removing the A/G improved his brightness more.

I'm not complaining though, I still think the picture is bright. However, I think I might investigate adding a cap to over drive the bulb to see how much more light I could get. I'm cautious though, as I looked at a couple of pictures where the faces looked washed out from too much light, so maybe I should not push it.

the only light leaks I have are around the door, the air inlet, and the air exhaust. For the box, however, I used black silicone caulk to seal up all the other joints.

When I get chance I'll add in a picture of the PJ in action.

Cheers!

Today, I pulled off the front surface mirror from my SeeRite PJ I bought from Craigslist. The FS mirror is not big enough for my PJ, but it did let me check to see if I could get an image free of ghosting. So I merely taped it to my existing mirror, and gave it a go! smile.gif

Ghosting is easiest to see with lighter lettering against a dark back ground. Here is a Star Wars lettering picture that shows the ghosting:

Attached File  2007_04_08_FSM___Pic_1___Star_Wars_before.jpg ( 50.95K ) Number of downloads: 26

You can see the outline of the letters above and below the main lines.

With the FS mirror taped to the original mirror, I was able to test.

Although the movie image is smaller, there isn't any ghosting at all. The movie is visually crisp.

Attached File  2007_04_08_FSM___Pic_1___Star_Wars.jpg ( 75.97K ) Number of downloads: 31

The blurriness that can be seen at the edges is merely due to the clear packaging tape that holds the FS mirror to the rear surface mirror.

The FS mirror is 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) thick.

Here is another picture... of Yoda. If you look closely at his skin you can see double ghosting. In particular, his LH ear (the Right side of the picture), you can see double outline just above it & below it.

Now with the FS mirror, the ghosting is eliminated:

So is the ghosting all that bad? Well Yes and No! Yes, it that it just seems like something just isn't quite right but you can't put your finger on it. But "No" in that the only time you can see it is when action stops, and when there is a light object against a black background. So titles, menus, movie credits, sport scores and the like all have a ghost.

So were can I find an inexpensive FS mirror? LL sells on for $35 + shipping. I'd like to pay only 1/2 of that. Any ideas of where I could find one?

Cheers!

Don't forget, I'm also using a precondenser with the 317mm collimating fresnel. You should look into a lens to use with your 220mm preferrably in the 12" fl or AV's hard to find 6"x9"fl. The extra capacitor boost will definately add to the fun. As far as washed out faces and the like, just lower your contrast at the same time play with your gamma.

With tweaks such as the precondenser plus the capacitor boost and a Dalite Highpower 2.8 gain screen the picture literally jumps off at you even with little ambient lighting on. Really an eye raiser. ohmy.gif

My set-up consists of...

> Osram 400W HQI T/S Bulb
> 220 Fresnel
> ViewSonic 17" LCD
> 650 FL Fresnel
> A 1/8" thick 2nd surface Mirror, with a 1/4" Thick 1st surface mirror taped to it.
> A 18" Besel Triplet
> Shooting Approximately 10 feet to the Screen
> Elite Screen 8 ft wide X 4.5 ft high

The Bulb is exactly 220 mm from the 220 fresnel.

Now for the pictures.... The Ugly, just got Uglier... I added 3 (temporary) legs just to make the triplet level with the middle of the screen. Makes me think of R2D2's Long Lost Ugly Cousin. LOL! tongue.gif

I've also noticed that my restrike time of the bulb is no more than 5 mins. I haven't found the minimum boundary for time yet.

So I decided to reduce the number of fans from 4 to 2. I disconnected the bottom 2 fans, as they provided the most noise. It seems as if the noise from the PJ is only about 1/3 of what it was. I also have not found any degredation in the LCD (black spots from high temps), so I believe the temperature must be OK. When I get a measurement I'll report it (I'll have to find my wireless temp sensor first).

Cheers!

Just a quick reference for future use...

Cleaning Front Surface Mirrors:

The mirror should be placed in a plastic tub filled with warm water and a few drops of liquid dishwashing detergent in solution and allowed to soak for 1/2 hour. The surface is then lightly swabbed with a wad of several cotton balls while immersed face up. The mirror is then removed from the bath and thoroughly rinsed under the faucet and finally rinsed with steam distilled water to remove any minerals in the tap water. The mirror is then placed on its edge on a mat of paper towels (chocked with a couple of erasers so it will not roll away) and allowed to drip dry. Lingering droplets should be absorbed with the tip of a piece of plain unscented bathroom tissue. Do not attempt to rub off the drops. Though some very minor stains may remain from the droplets and very light sleeks appear after several cleanings, these are of no consequence. The important thing is that the mirror surface remain clean. Diagonals should be treated in the same manner. One must remember that there is a difference between cosmetically clean and optically clean. A few spots may not be cosmetically attractive but are completely inconsequential optically.

Cheers!
