Got a lot done today!!

- Box is built (top is not on.. buts no biggy)
- Monitor is stripped!
- Tested LCD... deep breath... its not broke!

I had 3/4" MDF cut at Lowe's... I should have checked the guy's work... the bottom board shows how for off the one cut was (1/4")... After finding this I check all the other cuts.. almost everything was an 1/8 to big (which is ok since EVERYTHING was off ohmy.gif ).
Attached File  0220061019.jpg ( 47.8K ) Number of downloads: 52

Tada.. Its a box! once the edge was straightened out the construction took no time!
Attached File  0220061307.jpg ( 36.2K ) Number of downloads: 53

I have to post the monitor pix in the next message (out of room on this on...)

I had the lowes by me recalibrate their panel saw, it was off and i took a drywall square and showed them, it was out 1/4" every 2', the next week i went back and it cuts good now. They had the manufacturer align the rails for them.

I got the monitor stripped.. wasn't too bad... donated a few dollars to the swear jar but the LCD is now free! Here's what I had the hardest time with...

I removed the outer screws and was abusing my credit card more then my g/f on the day after thanks giving! laugh.gif ..anywayz.. I found a hidden screw under the mount, once it was remove the back cover popped right off!

After a few minutes of trying to remove the metal shield I realized i had to unscrew the nuts around the display plug

I used a credit card to loosen the metal frame away from the back-light. Then I popped the two FFC up and the back light lifted off.
Attached File  0220061420.jpg ( 65.84K ) Number of downloads: 49

I dropped the LCD from about 2" when it came out of the metal frame.. I was sure i broke it.. so I setup it up to test it out and noticed I yanked out the FCC connecting the front controls to the main board... i was sure i broke that two.. connecting the front control was easy (just popped in and out like the other two) but connecting it back to the main board was a b!#^& !!! after a few tries and a hammer (j/k) i got it connected. I hooked it up and got an image!! (can't see it in the picture below but its this forum smile.gif )
Attached File  0220061523.jpg ( 39.51K ) Number of downloads: 45

On that note I placed it in the plastic bag it came in and put the tools away.

Quick update:

I got a sled built! But when test fitting the LCD I noticed the one slot is kinda snug. I need to trim it and everything should be ready! I got a friend coming over tomorrow to start the wiring.

As normal, things got delayed...

My friend could not make it over Saturday so i spent part of the day trimming the sled and planning the wires.

Sunday i painted the inside of the box with black BBQ paint. Then my friend (and his friend) came over and wired everything up for me. It would have been nice if the ballast had a better wiring diagram on it... mine is all black text showing two black wires coming in and two going to the lamp... The wiring diagram here said it would have a blue and brown wire to the lamp but mine had two blues... after a good 45 minutes on the forums I found some posts saying it didn't matter which way you wired it.

We hooked it and draw straws on who was hitting the button... i lost... turned it on looked away, but nothing happened.. so turned it off really fast. we check everything and it all looked good so i turned it on again.. 4 or 5 seconds later i hear a small hum and POW we've got light!! ohmy.gif

after a about a minute the room was glowing green and slowly turned to white. it was brighter in there then outside!

My friend left and i ran to get some PVC and glass. I think the cashier at Lowe's has my credit card number memorized... I was there 3 times 4 days! I can't find anywhere that sells tempered glass or even knows what lexan is... so i got regular glass for right now (i read some plogs that did this, so i figured what the heck!). It was getting late by the time i got back so nothing else got done over the weekend. Hopefully it will be done soon!!!

I got the focusing mechanism done last night but i might re-do it...

I found a PVC "hub" at Lowe's that looked good. its a 3" pipe with a 1/8" ridge in the center of the inside. i was hoping the triplet would slide down in the pipe and sit on the ridge... didn't work...

so what i did was make a donut for the triplet to sit in then put that in the pipe (the triplet is at one end of the pipe). i put some weather stripping around the hole in the box and the pipe fits nice and tight, but there is one problem...

the pipe is about 3 or 4 inch's long! how much is this going to cut into my picture? how much should i cut off?

I rigged up some nice mounts for the controls boards. By recycling the metal frame that housed them in the LCD and some old PC mainboard mounts (the little gold thingies - see second picture) they now sit nicely on the sled. Lining up the holes was the hardest part. What i did was lay the boards where i wanted them then I pressed the tip of a drill bit though the holes to scratch a mark, removed the boards and drilled the holes. Using a 1/8" drill bit the mounts threaded right into metal and wood! I may add some glue but they are pretty solid with out it.

I tried both home depot and Lowe's, neither even knew what i was talking about (i even asked more then one person at each place). Is it called something else? the guy at Lowe's tried to sell me plexy glass or duraplex. its not the same thing, is it? I didn't see anything that said X10 on it...

is regular glass going to cause any issues? Anybody know how much heat two regular 1/8" sheets of glass can take (two pieces sandwiching the UV filter) oh, and that leads to one last question... Will the UV filter be reusable or melt to the glass?

thanks for any advice, maybe i'll post this in the help forum too...

Those guys don't know anything. At Home Depot go to the back where the pre-cut sheets of plexiglass are. It will be the plastic with the green plastic protector on it.

thanks for the tip! I will go look for the green covered ones. I wish i would have read this last night seeing how i just framed and glued my glass in my box sad.gif .

heavy duty liquid nail is easy to remove, right? laugh.gif (i didn't seal the top knowing that i will be replacing the glass soon)

I searched the forums all day yesterday about the heat question and got no where... so i'll ask again... how much heat is regular glass going to protect against? is it going to crack or break easily from the heat?

new heat question: Is liquid nail going to hold up in the areas around the glass frame? it is on both the front and back of the frame (I'm more worried about the side facing the light)

Thanks for the help!!!

Quick update on build status:

Heat shield has been test fit and painted, its ready to install. I built a nice frame out of 1/4" U channels and glued 3 sides of it in my box. it holds two pieces of 1/8" glass nicely in place. I may get this thing fired up tonight!!!

I didn't get anything done yesterday but i did a test a few minutes ago. i mounted my lens and fired it up! (no lcd, cuz i haven't test the temps yet) a few minutes went by and i was amazed! I had a 100"+ block of light on my wall!!!! WOW its was big and i didn't think it looked too bad either (nice and square) then i opened the lid... my front lens were off about an 1" (and it was still bright!) i lifted them up and double WOW my room just lite up with light off the wall!!! I think i can tweak my sled height and fix this but Its getting late and as much as i want to fix this now it can wait until tomorrow when i have a full day to test and play. maybe watching movies soon!!!

The light has been running for about an hour now and temp where the LCD is gonna go has been under 80 the whole time. I have an issue with my air filter... my intake is 3/4" wide and 12" long. this is big enough isn't it?

it was 1/2" wide but i notice the fan was choking with the lid closed. with 3/4" the fan still has a slight choke to it so i may widen the hole another 1/8". with out any air filter the temp stays a cool 75!! add the filter and it jumps to just under 80 in seconds.

Getting ready to mount the LCD!!! i hope i get a good pictures i'm so nervous!

I'm happy with the LCM 15v5. it stripped easy and looks great! I have not tried antiglare removal and i don't think i will. I wish it had placement controls like a CRT (H/V movement and keystone adjustment) but i don't think you'll find many LCD's that have that. let me know how your build goes!!
