Lens?

Looking through the Projector guide and through various PLOGs, your Collector fresnel needs to be matched to the triplet projector lens (correct?)
What is the margin for error for this and what are the issues associated with not having it exactly matched?
I have a 342mm FL Triplet and 3DLens sells the fresnels I need, but the closest they have is 330mm (My collimator will be 220mm).

My plan is to use a bog standard 15" LCD (XGA) Monitor, if this makes any difference.

I just want to be sure before I order these, they need to come a Long way (I live in the UK, if anyone knows any UK based fresnel dealers please do tell! - Taking too long for an old OHP Unsplit to show up on ebay =()

Many thanks for any clarification, I've been scouring the board for the past 3 days pondering the design of my projector, Driving me mad

Cutting unsplit fresnels from an ohp? Also precondenser question...

I have an unsplit set of fresnels from a 3m 9550 that I was hoping to use in my projector. However, first I wanted to cut the fresnels since I am planning to use a 12.1" lcd and the fresnels are 12" by 12". Am I able to cut these fresnels even though they are glued together? and if so how do i do it (should I score both sides of the fresnel)? Also, it seems that the fresnels are only glued around the sides but I tried running a knife between the fresnels, although this seemed far too difficult and the knife did not cut through the glue well.

My second question is concerning precondensers, as I don't know how to find a condenser lens that will work (I tried the precondenser calculator but i got confused ). Anyways, I'm using a 250w lamp, a 12.1" lcd, and it seems that the fresnels from my ohp are both 330mm focal lengths judging from how far the lamp and triplet are away from the fresnels (I realize that 330mm for the back fresnel is less than ideal especially for such a small lamp but I was wondering if it would work with a precondenser). Anyways, what diameter and fl should i be looking for in condenser lens? I found this one http://www.lumenlab.com/store/index.ph...;products_id=24 and this one http://www.agilentpixel.com/product.php?id_product=91 but I don't know what will work in my system. Thanks for the help.

Edit: I've been reading Dazzzzla's Plog (amazing looking projector) and here is the link to the precondenser he used http://www.surplusshed.com/pages/item/l3788.html. I'm also starting to think that I won't be able to use that 330mm rear frensel

Which LCD panel should i use?

After pondering a 17" build, i've decided that it would be better for me to go with a smaller panel instead because of my ohp triplet. However, i really want 720p and am trying to decide on a panel I should choose. I have two possible panels I would choose, one being a 10.1" lcd kit from http://www.manhattanlcd.com/ that I have seen linked to many times before. The problem with this choice though is price, as I'm trying to keep the price of this project down and $325 is a lot to spend on an lcd. My other option I see was brought to my attention by kiradess in this thread http://www.manhattanlcd.com/, which is a 12.1" hdtv capable of 720p. I was curious how much of a difference in picture quality these two panels would provide, and which panel you would recommend. Any other suggestions I would be glad to hear and thanks for your help.

Also worth mentioning, I don't really need all the inputs on the 10.1" lcd as this projector is only for xbox (which has a vga cable), my laptop, and cable tv. I'm also not a videophile, as my current tv is ancient, but I do appreciate good picture.

Edit:Also, I have heard several mentions about a 12.1" 720p lcd kit for $200 or $250 but I am assuming that offer is over as I can't find a deal like that anywhere.

3D Printing Idea - Does This Have Potential?

Hi folks! I've been lurking here for a while, soaking up info in hopes of being a micRo owner in the future. I registered today because I had an idea to share for discussion.

In a nutshell: selective laser sintering, using powder coating as the medium.

I don't know much about 3D printing or powder coating, and I don't know if this possibility has been explored before (though I've never seen it). But it seems like this could be done inexpensively (as far as 3D printing goes), in the DIY domain, and make cheap, strong, finely detailed parts.

Here's some Wikipedia quotes regarding powder coating, and my thoughts on the potential for 3D printing.

"The most common polymers used are polyester, polyester-epoxy (known as hybrid), straight epoxy (Fusion bonded epoxy) and acrylics."

So there's a variety of materials, with at least some readily available and mass produced, for different physical properties you might need in a part. And in different colors too! I found polyester powder coating on Ebay for $6.00/lb, in single pound quantity. Not bad at all, considering you only consume the material actually used in the part, and the rest of the powder used as a support can be reused over and over.

"...most powder coatings have a particle size in the range of 30 to 50 μm..."

Sounds like it would allow for fine details, and smooth uniformly with a powder rake.

"When a thermoset powder is exposed to elevated temperature, it begins to melt, flows out, and then chemically reacts to form a higher molecular weight polymer in a network-like structure. This cure process, called crosslinking, requires a certain degree of temperature for a certain length of time in order to reach full cure and establish the full film properties for which the material was designed. Normally the powders cure at 200°C (390°F) in 10 minutes... The application of energy to the product to be cured can be accomplished by convection cure ovens or infrared cure ovens."

Perhaps it's possible to quickly fuse the powder into a cohesive part, using an inexpensive infrared diode laser. The relatively weak part could then be fully cured to full strength, while supported by a different powder medium (inert, not thermoplastic), in any oven.

Building this machine could be as simple as adding a powder tray, powder rake, and laser to a micRo.

Your thoughts on this?

I just happened upon this website today, and saw something I haven't seen before with an overhead projector. Apparently these 2 models feature a kind of keystone correction in the lens assembly. http://www.califone.com/products/ohp2400.php is the site. There are links to the specs of the two in pdf form on that page. From the description, supposedly you can change the mirror angle up or down, and then adjust this knob to eliminate the keystoning. I wonder how it works. The 2400 model comes with a triplet head. I'm tempted to email them about getting a replacement head for the broken one I don't actually own. lol. I imagine it tilts one of the elements inside the triplet, either that or a lens in front of the triplet kind of like tilting the front fresnel. Anyone see this kind of thing before? Any thoughts?

LG U1 WUXGA Panel Transmisiveness

So I replaced my damaged Samsung U1 with the LG U1 for the slightly better specs. My old Samsung had the mirror layers removed and the AG polished about 95% smooth. My new LG panel only has the mirror layers removed (the second left a thick layer of glue, also removed) and the AG is left untouched. So my issue is this: The LG with original AG has only 1/2 the lux transmission.

My center screen lux dropped from 99lux with the samsung to 50lux with the LG! Would a polished AG make that much of a difference? Or a higher contrast ratio? I didn't expect my lux to be cut in half, now it makes me want to deal with the LG's antiglare to improve some lux but we all know what fun that process is.
I need a good quality cooling fan

So last month I replaced my cooling fans, that had lasted 3 years, because they were starting to get loud. I assume because the bearings were going out. They would make horrible noise for 15 minutes or so and then stop. Slowly that 15 min. turned into 30 min. and I couldn't stand it anymore.

I could stick a wire into the fan and hopefully knock it back in balance, but this got tiring doing it 10 times a night.

So I went to Radio Shack and bought the exact same fans that had lasted me 3 years.

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.js...oductId=2102825

I was going for cheap.

So now a month later BOTH new fans are making noise like the bearings are going out. I called Radio Shack and since it's been a month and I have no recipt or packaging now, they won't even think about taking them back.

I'm out $50 and looking for a new place to buy cheap electronic parts.

So I need a nice quiet long lasting cooling fan. I'm not worried about price anymore.

The worst thing is my fans are deep down in the guts of my projector and I have to totally tear it down get to them.

Dim Image

Hi Team,

Just wanted to say thank you for all of the great information, and thought I would throw my first issue out there. I am getting a very crisp but very dim image. The colors are not very visible but I see a lot of detail in the picture. I was wondering if my lamp might be a little too far away from my LCD. I was using a set of two 550 mm FLs a 15 inch display and a 400 watt bulb. I ordered a 220 mm and am awaiting its arrival. My bulb is able 17 inches from my LCD. I am thinking I need to build a new light enclosure that is shorter. I did some pretty crazy stuff with some venting I picked up at home depot and took kind of a 3 chamber approach to the light enclosure.
So basically my question is: Do you think 17” is too far from the LCD?

Thank you.

Upon my request, he brought in a great little LCD panel and set-up a controller for it, then sent photos showing it functional, as it was a new combo, and we were talking about doing some customization/development. Unfortunately, I have not heard from him since Sept 24th, and am wondering if anyone has?
AP forums (YOINK) are full of spam from about the same time as well, indicating he's not online running AP.
I'm not concerned about my last order as I can get $ back from credit card, I'm just hoping he's OK and will reappear soon...

Condenser Lens for 575w lamp

I've decided to take the plunge and attempt a 15.4" WUXGA build. I'm planning to use a 220/650mm fresnel combo with an 18" beseler. Also, I have a 575W light source pulled from an old projector with original reflector. I'm looking through old plogs, and I have noticed some talk about condensers to increase brightness in small builds. As this is a relatively large build and I am using a 575w light source, will I have any increase in brightness by using a condenser lens? Also, what are the cons and pros of using a condenser lens? Any input is appreciated. Thank you.

Looking for FL of the columnator, condenser, and triplet. So many screen options though...

That new 12" coby set looks awesome for the price, but is too big for any of the eVo optics. 10.x" is not cheap, and too big for the evo fresnels. is 7.2" is expensive.
I have no yet done any mod on any PJ, nor I have build any... I am a noob and have some understanding of electronics, but not circuity. However after reading countless bypass. I could see that all you suppose to do is to ground one of the cables that comes out of the ballistic to trick the system into thinking there is a bulb..

I have a viewsonic PJ 556D (2k Lumens), which I wanted to mod. After that, I may wanted to mod my Dual lamp commerical Panasonic PT-D5500UL (5k Lumnes) projector.. When I took the original bulb out of the viewsonic. I only see 2 connection point, probably + and -. Therefore I was wondering if I just bridge the 2 connection, will that trick the system into thinking there is a bulb? Or must it done at the ballistic wire out? Anyone with a full understand could explain to me why if just bridging the bulb socket won't work?

good ballast choice for this bulb for OHP?

Hey all, I've been a member for a while, but haven't really done too much with projection, just drooled over all the great info and pics everyone has.

So I decided I should finally tackle a few projects - first of course, the classic OHP...

So I have this really old OHP, and an old 15" gateway monitor i'm gonna strip down for testing - but i want to replace the very yellowish bulb in the projector, and wanted a bit of feedback on my choices. I was thinking THIS for the ballast, or maybe this. NOT that bulb thats with it (the ebay page), but was going to use THIS , for the bulb itself - That type of bulb was in this list here from these forums.

the projector already has a stock old lens, i'm not sure how to tell what kind it is (triplet or whatever), so any help on that could be nice - the model of this beast, has the model "3m model#66ar projector" on the side, i think its older than I am I dont even remember how I got it lol. It has a tag on the back, says 3M projector company, but its worn.

Anyways, I'm not really crazy about quality that much, I just want something to test for now, but want a good bulb/ballast I can use to build a better OHP in the near future - with (maybe) an HD 15.4" lcd. If you think I should go for a 250w bulb/ballast, then thats fine!

BTW, I probably will not be watching blu-ray or even that much HD at all...dvd quality is fine with me, so I Could go for just using a potable DVD player with RCA input, strip the poo outa that, and go from there.

What should I grab eh? Thanks all!

Diy projector need some help!

Hi guys, I've been trying to make a cheap LDC overhead projector, very much the same as the one seen on youtube here...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6n6jW0XIV0

But I've had a few issues. Firstly the stage glass was totally smashed on the OH-projector, I'm guessing that this will not matter? Can I use it without the stage glass?

Second, I managed to get the screen appart (a mission without a screwdriver I can tell you!), its a Hyundai L72s, which is a 17 inch screen. Its a bit big but I figure I'll screw around with my computer display settings and make the borders smaller. Anyways - the screen seems not very transparent. It looks dim on the top of the projector, but its pretty much black by the time the light is aimed at the wall. Do I need a more powerful bulb?

The LCD panel itself is a very black film, do you guys normally just ramp up bulb sizes? If it's bright enough for a transparency, should it be ok for an LCD? From what I can see the bulb is a 130V 400W, which seems like it should be good enough? I can try post some photos if needed, so far this has turned out quite frustrating!

Thanks for any help!!!!

what dimensions would my fresnels have to be to use a 21.5" screen for a projector? sure i'm being stupid, but drawing a blank as to why I have not found any attempts with one yet.
(assuming the other parts can be found, seems to be a cheap way for a 1080p attempt)

any issues with this setup?

Originally my PJ was as follows [ 400w MH > 220mm frez > 10.6LCD > 550mm frez > 18" beseler]
It had a 16ft throw, and was pretty good. Id like to change things up for the rebuild. Im thinking of building it into a coffee table, which would shorten the throw to only 9ft. I have a few questions before i move forward with this idea. Will i gain some brightness by moving it that much closer? With the lens being roughly 9ft from the wall, and the bottom of the image being roughly 1.5ft above the floor, will i have much keystoning issues at this angle? This is the new setup im thinking of using, im wondering if you guys think ill run into any problems. It will be as such: 400w MH > 220mm frez> 10.6LCD > 317mm frez > LL s15 triplet (320mm focal range right?) According to the FocalCalc it should give me a screen that is 85.44". On a 10.6LCD, what does that equate to in length and height?

help me design a folded PJ...

Hey, well its been close to 2 years since i finished my straight shooter PJ. Just recently something crapped out on me, so im tearing it down and rebuilding. This time around im gunna make it a horizontal folded design. Problem is, its been 2 years, so i dont remember all the specs from when i built mine. I want to reuse my lamp, LCD and triplet if possible. The LCD im using is the 10.6 HD LCD, im using an 18" beseler. The biggest thing that i need, is for it to have a 20ft throw. Can someone suggest what fresnels ill need, or direct me to a folded PJ calculator or something? Does anyone know the focal range on the 18" beseler? I cant finish my calculations without knowing that.

WUXGA LCD

I've read several threads that appear to say different things. Does it matter which lcd a PW106 controller is programmed for, or will any WUXGA lcd work. For example, if I have a PW106 controller programmed for a Sharp panel, can I use an LG Philips? The reason I ask is because I just managed to break my sharp panel, and am needing to replace it. Also, if anyone has a panel that will in my situation and they are willing to part with it (will pay slightly more if AG is already removed), please contact me with a price. Thank you.
