Hi and welcome to the forums. I am waiting for the 17 inch pro lens which are being made for the 17 inch monitors by lumenlab. The first pro lenses didn't work out so most here have been waiting for 5+ months now for the new pro freshnels. The pro lens prototype which Brain got last month got 2 out of the 3 problems fixed and is now being reworked again. It can be anytime now that the pro lens kit will be available to us again.
Maybe you shouldn't strip your lcd right now, that way it won't be laying around to get broken. The 17 inch lcd's are a little tough to build without the correct freshnels and pro lenses. Some have had luck building one by using the freshnels from diy projectors. They will make a larger box if you use the freshnels from there. As far as the ribbon goes there should be an extension ribbon available through lumenlab for it. count the number of wires then measure the width and look on the lumenlab product page. Hope this helps. Good luck with your pj. Hope to see some awesome pics soon.CS -------------------- |

Check out Matropalis' PLOG:
http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3527 From this you will notice that it is possible to make a 17"er with the standard LL lens and bigger fresnels as long as the throw distance is not going to be a problem. Good Luck. -------------------- |

thanks guys for your input, ill count the pins today and see how we go from there, and ill check out matropalis plog also ,i agree with stripping the screen and having it lying around may get damaged, what i was going to do was strip the rest of it and have it set up in a frame already to wire up to the computer to test that its
still works!!! im being extremly careful with this one,but maybe i should just wait till i get the cable or how ever im going to extend the cable be fore i continue ??? ill see how we go today, cheers guys.as for the fresnels ,yes i was a little worried that i couldnt use the standard lense but i thought that maybe i would just not get the full size of the 17" lcd projected and maybe just have like the size of a 15" projected, would i be on the right lines in thinking this way??????any way ill post more as it happens . |

If you use the standard lens, you will get the whole picture, it just will be a bigger projected picture on the wall (the projector will need to be closer to the wall for the 17" screen - not too much closer though). Matropalis said he got a 110" screen at 8' from the wall, I believe (something like that - it's in the PLOG).

I would get the cable just to make sure you got the correct one. Of course if you are going to get it to turn on while you have it mounted you'll need to seperate the board from the lcd. A lot of the members make a "sled" unit to put the lcd and all the circuitry on it so it's easily removed in one piece without dismanteling the pj. Someone sells a prebuilt sled with keystone ears. maybe someone will post that thread for you. CS -------------------- |

yeah a sled type set up was what i was thinking of,but ive decied to wait and get the right cable first before i get to carryed away ,as i tend to do!!!
just read matropalis plog ,i have to say awum!!!!!! this is pretty much what i was hoping for if not alot better!!!,he has done an awsum job thus far, great inspiration to myself and im sure many others on here, well ive just ordered a set of fresnels they are 220/330 focal lenght and a size of 15.5x13.5 i think these are supose to be able to be used with lcds up to 17" acording to diyprojector company,so ill keep every one informed as to how they go ,but i think these are the same ones that matropalis had used in his tests, now as i live in australia things here are virtualy impossible to get hold of, so i have to sorce stuff from over seas so please bear with me on these processes as postage from the states can take up to 2 weeks, anyway im off to figure out how many pins this cable is that i need to extend,be back soon,.... |

In addition to the # of pins, you need to measure the width of the FFC cable in metric.
Generally you can divide the width in mm by the # of pins to get the pitch. |

ok well it took me ages of checking and rechecking, those pins are tiny!!!had trouble seeing them as i counted!!but i came up with that there is 30 pins,
and the width of the cable is 15mm so 15 / 30 =0.5 thanks deathray64,ive order a few cables 30 pin x0.5 6inch in lenght and also a few 30 pin connector thingys from digikey,so hopefully with those parts i can construct a bit of an extention cable????? i guess now i have to sit back and wait for them to arrive, till then im gona read thru the plogs and find out more bout the 17" set ups,...... |

QUOTE (evilbetty @ Jul 11 2005, 06:30 PM) I just took a walk to the workshop... nowhwere near fitting. Fresnel dimensions are 318x250mm, but you've gotta allow a bit for framing. Would still get a few more pixels than a 15", but probably not worth it. I initially wanted a 17" as well, but I'm making a box (width x height anyway) with dimensions to take a 17 and using a BenQ 15" FP537 for now (absolutely no FFC issues Edit: Oops, it's a BenQ531, BTW, the LumenLabs order arrived within 3 days to me This post has been edited by ozstang65: Jul 11 2005, 09:29 AM -------------------- .

Using FFC extensions can be tricky.. they have to be perfectly aligned for them to work.
I was extending my PSone 5" with a FFC extension i bought here from lumenlabs and it took me 6 tries to get the cable seated right. what sort of problem are you having with your extensions? |

well the basic problem is that i have 2 6" cables which are held together by
2 connectors the whole set up is very dodgy indeed but on conecting they did put alot of lines up and down the lcd ,also the problem with connecting the lcd ffc to the cable as its so very small and flexible the presure of the cable twisting around going from the control board up to the othe board on the side of the lcd is making it very hard to keep it in position ,another thing is that im not sure if the pitch of my extion cable is correct ,it has 30 pins on the control board thats for sure as it is printed on the board in 1 to pin 30,i would put pics up but its probably not worth it as my camera is so crap the pics would be all blurry ,im at abit of a loss for ideas??? |

Well i could see how it would be very hard to keep all that together.. no wonder it doesnt work..
I suggest you find a single 12" cable so you can remove one of the connectors. And find a way to secure the connectors. I used some electrical tape. But your probably going to run into problems later if they somehow come apart. When i had a bad connection with my FFCs it would show a bunch of lines and colors like you said.. so im pretty certain you have a bad connection. Check/compare the pins on the original cable and the extension under a magnifying glass. Put both ends together and line them up. They may not be exactly the same size but they will probably be close.. as long as the pins line up somewhere and are not touching 2 pins at one you should be ok. |

next is the frame removal, there are about 16 small slots running right around the frame al you have to do is use a small flat head screw driver and push in to the slots and lever the frame up carefully, you can find each slot by using your finger nail down the slot

frome the screen from rear frame, next unplug the main lcd board cable connector then remove the 4 screws on the side of the lcd frame cut the zip tie holding the 2 control board cables remove the silver tape covering the back light plugs remove the back light plugs 4 of them, then you should be able to remove the whole steel frame that holds the power supply board ,
